This happened to my son at 9. I felt horrible too. He was having really severe urological issues, topical steroids didn't work and he was in pain for weeks and missed lots of school because the doctors didn't want to rush to circumcision. After that experience, recovery was a cakewalk - he was scared to see his penis as it was healing but the sensitivity wasn't as bad as the pain before.

Anyway, it really sucked. I wish I'd known what the earliest symptom (slow peeing) meant and gotten the steroid cream earlier in case it could have gone differently. But the problem is fixed. It's better on the other side, OP.

What part of Europe is this?

Spain in the 1990s. Don’t know why this was customary. Perhaps a vestige of North African culture? I know in some Muslim communities they do it at like age 12? I’m not sure I have that right.
