Hi, I'm an adult (27F) with a class 3 tongue tie. I'm looking into getting it fixed because it has caused me a lot of problems with with my oral health my whole life (it has been a major contributing factor to so many cavities). I also had to spend two years in speech therapy as a child. Unfortunately, reversing a tongue tie in adults and older children is more complicated than in babies and requires some form of physical therapy afterwards. My parents were given the option to get my lingual frenulum (tongue tie) clipped when I was a baby, but chose not to because I was eating just fine. If they could have known the frustrations and problems that declining that procedure would cause me, they would have had my frenulum clipped in a heart beat. Two of my siblings had more severe tongue ties, which were resolved shortly after their births. They have had better oral health and speech outcomes than myself and my 4th sibling, who has a similar tongue tie and did not have it clipped.
In short, please strongly consider getting these ties resolved, the earlier the better! Having a tongue tie can cause a lot of unforseen problems for your child as they get older. I found this forum while doing some research on getting my tongue tie resolved -- I am not a parent, nor am I in the DC area, just an adult dealing with a class 3 tongue tie. |
