Because a lot of people have less interest in Northern European countries. Many people find the museums and sites more interesting in southern Europe. Many people like to visit a beach during their vacation and you don’t travel to Germany or Sweden for that. Most people find the food in Spain, Italy and France preferable to say, the Netherlands.

Then there are school vacations and many workplaces are more supportive of long vacations during the summer.

PP here. Most people are stupid . Seriously, Northern Europe in high summer is glorious!

I know you think you’re more sophisticated.

Here’s the problem with Northern Europe. It’s not that much fun! Also the food blows. And it’s expensive.

Less fighting and more reviews please! Particularly interested in places outside this Big 3 (Rome Venice Florence). Would love an itinerary for Tuscany, Elba, Sardinia, Dolomites, etc. anyone go to Sicily? Have heard it can actually be cooler due to the mountains and beaches.

Oh I don’t think it, I know it.

Anyone who dismisses entire countries, cultures, histories and cuisines the way you do should have their passport revoked. What a waste.

Sicily is fine if you are on the coast and in the water. Taormina was hot but you can go down to the beaches and it’s good beach weather. Ditto for Puglia.

Croatia is perfect for island hopping.

Montenegro is striking with its super tall mountains.

Thing about Venice - I'm not sure what you're wanting to see tourist wise there. Venice is about soaking up ambiance. I mean you can do some glass blowing and Murano but you really need to be in St Marks to appreciate Venice. It's hella crowded but most of the fun of Venice is getting lost in the streets and people watching in St Marks for hours. It's just not a place where you are going to visit 50 things to see. It's about relaxing and looking around you . It's hard to do of course with a zillion people around but everyone's in the same boat

I would never do these places at end July only beginning of June but good luck!

Venice isn’t as crowded as I expected—even San Marco square. We took long walks everywhere, and at one point my kids asked where are the people were…because we had gone 15 mins without seeing anyone. We ended up in a more local/neighborhood area with a bakery where nobody spoke any English and locals were buying produce off a boat. We thought it was interesting to see two elderly men enjoying coffee and cigarettes outside their business while listening to American country music.

We didn’t experience the rush of crowds in Rome that dcum describes. The area around the pantheon was crowded and there were lines at the top tourist attractions, but we spent the bulk of our time wandering around backstreets and visiting less popular attractions.

Ok well I’ll enjoy the south of France.

DP. You’re not a nice person! Why is that?

Those discussing Northern Europe on an Italy three, can you please take this to a separate thread?

To OP:
We spent some time in Castellina, very cute and relaxing and gorgeous country side.
I’d also suggest visiting Siena- I probably like it more than Florence

The tours mentioned earlier (that included meals on local farms) left from Siena (Tuscan Escapes).

PSA: We went to Italy in November over Thanksgiving break. It was a breeze. Minimal crowds, cool weather, no real lines to speak of, easy to get reservations. Did we go to the beach? No, but we did see all the sites in Rome plus other destinations. It was also 1/2 the price.
So if anyone is looking to see Italy, try a fall break.

My #1 piece of advice is pack like 2-3 thin outfits and leave your suitcase empty for all the shopping.
