Thing about Venice - I'm not sure what you're wanting to see tourist wise there.  Venice is about soaking up ambiance.  I mean you can do some glass blowing and Murano but you really need to be in St Marks to appreciate Venice. It's hella crowded but most of the fun of Venice is getting lost in the streets and people watching in St Marks for hours.  It's just not a place where you are going to visit 50 things to see.  It's about relaxing and looking around you .  It's hard to do of course with a zillion people around but everyone's in the same boat :)

Venice isn’t as crowded as I expected—even San Marco square. We took long walks everywhere, and at one point my kids asked where are the people were…because we had gone 15 mins without seeing anyone. We ended up in a more local/neighborhood area with a bakery where nobody spoke any English and locals were buying produce off a boat. We thought it was interesting to see two elderly men enjoying coffee and cigarettes outside their business while listening to American country music.

We didn’t experience the rush of crowds in Rome that dcum describes. The area around the pantheon was crowded and there were lines at the top tourist attractions, but we spent the bulk of our time wandering around backstreets and visiting less popular attractions. [/quote]
