1. Heat acclimation. Get out there, do the volume. Slow as you feel is fine for like 80% of your running.
2. Bring water always, Gatorade or similar is better. I have a soft bottle like 14 oz, I fill it with Gatorade the night before and freeze it. At 75-80 degrees in the morning, it's more than half thawed within 30 minutes. 3. Start before dawn if you can and do the work at the lowest temps of the day. 4. Avoid full sun if you can, e.g., wear a hat if you can take it and stay in the woods, under the shade of buildings, etc. 5. Don't wear a shirt if you can avoid it. I'm a guy, I would hate to have to wear something tight and thick across my upper body just to be able to run so credit to the female runners out there and how much hotter it must feel to get out there every day. 6. On really hot, humid days I feel like I shouldn't wear sunscreen. I stay in shade where I can. But I think the sunscreen impedes my ability to shed heat. I don't know if this is just in my head or scientifically valid. 7. Bring a couple of gu packets or whatever you eat with you if you're going long and have a workout. If you burn out, are thirsty and hot, you'll feel like you need to eat something just to make it home. 8. Rotate your shoes so you don't have to wear ones that are literally full of sweat the next day. 9. I also eat oatmeal like a couple hours before going out (yeah that's early) and having that food in my system almost certainly keeps me fueled when my body is working really hard. |
