Budget and Admissions

DS will apply everything but ED (EA, RD, rolling) - need to ensure he sees the full scope of merit aid (where available), in state tuition, best fit school of his accepted group and go from there. He also knows that over a certain amount he needs to qualify for merit to close the tuition delta. Feel very strongly about him not graduating with debt.

Only ED if you know you can afford it without merit aid.

+1 the best bets. This was exactly how it played out for both my kids. The in state publics and OOS publics with higher acceptance rates made up the likely list and they got in with enough merit to meet budget. Private schools (75K plus costs) that were targets or low reach maybe they got 10-15K merit at one of the schools and not the bigger half tuition (or more) scholarship. The private school where they received the 25-30K merit was the less competitive private with the not as desirable geographic location in their eyes. They excluded colleges that only offered need based aid that weren’t within our budget without aid. They applied EA everywhere that EA was offered.

I would also suggest looking at Jeff Selingo’s college buyers and sellers list as well in your research.

Got into:
Indiana Kelley school: $57k (no merit)
Pitt $55k, no merit
U South Carolina, Capstone scholar, $16k/year of merit, making it $44k/year
Jmu honors $32k in state
Waitlisted then denied: Va Tech pamplin school,Clemson
w&m: spring transfer admit, $42k/year
UVA: denied.

No way got into W and M but not VT….I call BS

I can see getting denied by VA Tech Pamplin (business school direct admits are more competitive) and being offered spring admission to W&M, sure.

What did DC choose?

I’d rather not say. Point is, they have options.

Your list is the same as about 75% of the NOVA boys I know that are interested in business. No one is going to know who you are. Please.

It’s true, it’s a spring admit though for WM. Being male and majoring in business and not first gen did not help for va tech pamplin, but being male helps for WM.

Why do you care so much where my kid decided to go? Bigger question: what would you have chosen? I bet it’s not the same for everyone.
