Best bet is in stats publics, then oos publics with lower oos costs and higher acceptance rates (e.g, SUNY, not u Michigan) then less competitive privates, then higher ranked privates. Only ED if you know you can afford it without merit aid.
+1 the best bets. This was exactly how it played out for both my kids. The in state publics and OOS publics with higher acceptance rates made up the likely list and they got in with enough merit to meet budget. Private schools (75K plus costs) that were targets or low reach maybe they got 10-15K merit at one of the schools and not the bigger half tuition (or more) scholarship. The private school where they received the 25-30K merit was the less competitive private with the not as desirable geographic location in their eyes. They excluded colleges that only offered need based aid that weren’t within our budget without aid. They applied EA everywhere that EA was offered. I would also suggest looking at Jeff Selingo’s college buyers and sellers list as well in your research.
