+1. This is the other guy's meeting, he has to provide the content. Maybe he has other topics or maybe he'll cancel: either way you won't be there at that time. |
| I am not fine, as it turns out. He called my boss (who is in Denver) at 7:45 EDT and laid into him, saying I was being "uncooperative." Boss told him to pound sand, but this manager is now furious with me and already working up to chain to let anyone within earshot know how useless I am. |
Your boss supports you and this manager is not making any friends doing this. |
Dollars to donuts this is not the first time and won't be the last time this manager is being a jerk. You're in thr right and your supervisor has your back. You'll be fine, especially since 70k isn't enough to get rid of you. If it goes to HR, ask them to renegotiate your salary to have you on call beyond an 8 hour work day. |
+1 The SVP is being ridiculous and KNOWS and is now digging in to save face. What a dick. What on earth do you need to demo on for an hour for 2 weeks? That's 10 hours! I would record 1/2 hour of myself and the SVP can play it and field questions. |
| You are majorly underpaid for their expectations. I’d find a new job. |
| You're only in this hotel with your kid and camp for a week right? Decline one or two of the invites, do the session from your car for the other few days (ex: drive to camp by 8 a.m., start call while kid watches screens with headphones and then nudge him out at 820 a.m.) |
| This d bag is dead set on the 8AM meeting because he wants to go rock climbing or something every afternoon. This was his way of taking summer days off but pretending that he works so much harder than everyone. That's why he's butthurt and elevating. You must stay the course, OP! |
| Why is your husband allowed to just be “unavailable”? That type of rigidity doesn’t work in my family. |
In my experience people don’t remember gossip about colleagues, they remember the gossiper. Stay polite and professional and helpful and people will remember you that way and remember the SVP’s spittle-flecked complexion that way. |
I suspect you're right! |
Yes this. If anyone else ever brings it up, just say, yes it was unfortunate he wanted to meet during a time I had a conflict and none of the alternative times I offered worked for him. Stay calm and do your work, that’s what really matters. |
|
So how long are you presenting for?
If there is no before care for the camp, arrive in enough time to get set up in your car. Make sure your child knows what time to get out of your car quietly. They are doing this for their convenience alone, as NO ONE wants to meet at 8 am. Do the same. Do the call from your car. |
+1. Your boss was likely PISSED at the early wake up call by someone who is not following company (informal) policy. And this guy working up the chain just looks more and more ridiculous. Trust that you are not the only person in the company that has to deal with camp drop off and compressed work hours during the summer. And you are only making $70k, so you should not be in this position of being asked during non-work hours. This doesn't reflect on you at all. |
| I would try to call in from the car a few days or find another camper and see if their ride can drop your child off a couple of days. |
