How many applications?

16 (current senior.) Accepted to 5 EA, rejected 1 ED1, accepted to ED2 choice, and withdrew the remaining 9 without receiving a decision.

For this poster what was the strategy? EA? ED at Hopkins? Etc. these are my DC top 3 choices and one parent also a Hopkins alum! GPA and tests scores?

Rising Senior applying ED to a school with 80% acceptance rate. Expecting to do 1 application only.

With an interest in a somewhat specialized major and some geographic limitations (no big cities primarily) that limited the range of options. At the end of the day, super happy with the result and the process overall.

Did he/she submit test scores?

Scores (upper 1300s, weighted GPA 4.42, decent ECs, strong essays) submitted for 6 of the 7 (the 7th is in CA and did not take scores - and that was the one rejection).

Junior, I think we will do 20 or so. Just in state is four, then a few out of state flagships, three or so reaches, some more safeties.

One ED, had 4-5 backups on the list if rejected, no idea why kids submit stupid high numbers of applications other than bragging rights for quantity of acceptances.

Too many IMO

18 schools. Decently(?) hi-stats, UW4.0, maxed ap’s(mostly 5’s, one 4, one 3), 1520/35. EC’s-? I thought they were good, but not sure how to quantify & subjectively judge.
Rejected(8): 2 ivies, 3 ivy+(ed1 wife’s undergrad, rd my undergrad), 1 top slac, 2 oos ‘top5’ publics. Accepted(6): 2 t25’s, 2 t40’s, 2 t75 targets w/merit.
Waitlist(4): 2 t25’s(1 of which turned into acceptance), 2 targets.
Based on the results, I think 18 was a good #. Partly wish kid tried for more ivies & t25’s, but kid was adamant on where she wanted to go vs not go.

If your kid applied to 18 schools, and got into 6 for sure, with 4 waitlists AND the schools were deliberately chosen by your kid, why do you partly wish kid tried for more? You would have hoped for lucking out/lottery win acceptance? Better financial aid?

Senior DC- applied to about 12. In at all safeties and 4 targets. Rejected one target and rejected at all reaches and WL one reach. MCPS 4.8 33.

Kid was adamant about where she wanted to go so she applied to 18 schools. Pretty much sums up the current standard operating procedure for college hunting in 2024.

-I’m completely wrong. Narcissism on my part for personal satisfaction & bragging rights. Kid happy as can be w/choices. Also got away with not applying to any safeties tho’ kid considered 2 of the targets as relative safeties.
