Not really. A 19 year old can enlist and drive, but not book a hotel room? Most people are taken by surprise, and the 19 year old may not know what to do, which is not a cricitism on their adulthood. As if you had all the answers at 19, PPs!. The shocking thing is that we expect them to act like adults in A, B, C ways, but oops not in D, E, F ways! It doesn't make sense and leads to confusion and frustration. |
Can't you just book the room and add him as occupant? I know my 19 year old son has booked AirBnBs with his girlfriend without issue. Do not use a fake ID under any circumstances, that is highly illegal to steal someone's identity. Plus it would not match his credit card. |
This was my exact thought. I guess OP is going to have to drive out with him and fly back. |
Enough with the comments on parenting styles. My kid had a similar problem - called places on their own and denied… That’s when I stepped in. Some of us do still try to help our “kids” out from time to time and don’t just throw them to the universe once they are 18. Have some grace. |
If your kids are younger, just wait until they're 19 and you realize they're not actually adults like you and me. If your kids are adults and never had this problem, shut up if you can't commiserate. If your kids experienced this problem and you have a solution to propose, cough it up, ducky. |

My 20yo kid actually did sleep in his car on his 16 hour trip home. He insisted and I said whatever.
That said, plenty of hotels like Hampton Inn, La Quinta, etc rent to 18 and up. |
| Is 21+ check in a new policy? I know for a fact I checked into numerous hotels while in college (and under the age of 18) but that was in the early 2000s |
It's not safe, and you know this. Would you have said whatever if your 20 year old had been a daughter? |
No but he is a jacked 20yo man and I was certainly not going to change his mind. |
Maybe he’s driving while she sorts out the hotel mess. |
|
+1 We have done this too. |
Well then don’t have kid take an internship a 2 day drive away. Problem solved. Hotels don’t have to do what you want. |
| Shouldn't this have been dealt with before he ever left? |
Please stop it. 18yo boys need to register for the selective service and 18yos serve our country in war. It's asinine that they can't rent a hotel room or car, and buy alcohol. |
