Carleton for recruited athlete

It's a highly regarded school, and I'm trying to learn more about it to see if the fit works. I don't see what the big deal is.

You insult the students by wondering if your normal child will fit.

Also, intellectual is somehow not normal?

If I had an athlete kid looking at Carlton, I would implore him to spend a weekend there, preferably staying with a current student-athlete, so he could get a better read on the campus vibe.

You sure have a lot of opinions about a school whose name you don’t even know how to spell.

Anyone who uses woke in the perorative clearly neither understands the origins of the word, nor how they come across to others.

DP-It's pejorative. Hopefully you are not the one chastising the PP for their misspelling of Carleton. Also the PP used it correctly. It seems you are the one triggered by people who use the word woke. Not everyone that says it is using it as a pejorative, simply saying the culture is indeed woke which might not be appealing to some who consider the views and associated actions with that culture as nonsense.

Isn't it annoying when the wokesters act like you're not allowed to use the word woke? Memo to wokesters: your day in the sun is over. We, the normal people of America, will use whatever words we damn please. And there is nothing you can do about it, because America is done with you freaks.

What makes someone a freak? I think those using the word woke that way that several of you do is a big tell on what kind of person you are.

Yes, a normal person. A freak is someone who goes around lecturing others on what words they have to use, or cannot use, what pronouns, etc. In any event, you guys have worn out your welcome. Enjoy November.

Are you so fragile that you get this spun up after being called out for using a racist dog whistle? WEAK person you.

NP- Are you so fragile that you get this spun up and invokes the tired old trope of "racist dog whistle after someone uses the word woke in it's proper context? WEAK person you.

It is a racist dog whistle, and yes, I will call it out every time. You can say whatever word you want to say, and the rest of us are free to judge you for it. Some of you are incredibly hateful people, and that probably includes yourselves. No well adjusted person goes on to rant about pronouns and transpersons like that. You sound miserable.

It's not racist at all. Most woke people are affluent white females. It refers to acceptance of post-modernist/neo-Marxist theories about society.

+1 The lack of self-awareness and false sense of moral superiority with these people is amusing. They don't get they are as bad as the people they constantly howl about.

Are you truly going to argue that woke concepts like equity and systemic racism do not originate in Marxist theory? The whole point of is to dismantle rights-based classical liberal thought.

OP - I was born and raised in Minneapolis. While it has been several decades, the stereotypical Carleton student to me was very smart, high achieving, and a bit odd. I agree that you should visit if you can. I would want to understand how integrated and appreciated athletes are in that cohort.
Anonymous
OP I am also from Minneapolis and agree with the PP. The people I know that went to Carleton are very interesting and successful and are really die hard fans of their school.

I have family of current and recent student athletes at Carleton and spent a good deal of time discussing their experience with them to see if it would be a fit for my daughter. Your son would be fine there as an athlete. My family members suggested my daughter might have a harder time finding a peer group she fit in with as the athletes naturally form friendships from their sports, they arrive early to campus so they already are bonded when the other students get there.

I think going to the admitted students pages for 2028 on Instagram might be helpful seeing the bios of kids gives a general feel for the types of students that will be in his general peer group.

As far as career services go it seems pretty minimal. Seems like most kids just go to grad school.

My current student finds the career services to be very active. They reach out to students proactively to help with internships, etc., including a special program for internships over the long winter break.

Of course, many students do pursue grad school. Carleton has long educated undergrads who want to go on to further studies. It's the 6th highest undergrad producer of Ph.D.s per capita after Cal Tech, Harvey Mudd, Swarthmore, MIT, and Hampshire.

Tell us you are stupid in the first sentence "woke"

OP this post is garbage as usual from the MAGA dumb crowd.

Carlton is a lovely school, smart intelligent kind kids for the most part. Your kid will find their peeps.

If you are overly concerned about the social climate of a school then it is not the right place for your kid.

And describing your kid as "normal" is weird. They are adults they are going to college to get a degree to get a job. Will Carlton have a courseload and major your kid likes? Does the career center have internships for that major or connections to jobs? Is the curriculum ie courseload what your young adult wants to study? Those are the ? you should be asking.

It's a small school either your kid wants a small school or not.

So no athletes are woke?

All this concern about athletes fitting in is funny. Especially at Carleton.

Our son graduated from Carleton recently. He loved it. Said the profs were passionate and engaging and the students intelligent, friendly, and unpretentious. There was no discernible divide between athletes and non-athletes. He had several friends at Chicago and didn’t notice a difference in “wokeness” when visiting their campus or vice versa. He is very pro free speech, fwiw.

How is it for kids who want to go into business - consulting, banking etc ?
