Electric dangers at SSMA

Anonymous
I remember years ago when the main rec room/gym was closed for over a year. And various other things wrong with the building from a frequently flooding basement to HVAC emergencies. Parents tried to offer help putting pressure on Howard but were often ignored or rebuffed by admin.

I agree that this is unacceptable, AND health and safety should get involved. I find it hard to blame the teacher for not checking for live wires.

Are you for real? Teachers should think "i wonder if we'll have any live wires today" Bonkers.

Also - who has time to go out ahead of the class? I'm going out at the same time as them.

Another example of parents having no clue what a teacher does all day. No teacher can leave their class unattended to walk around the entire playground and check for hazards. What an absurd expectation.

Wow. I am in the neighborhood but have decided to enroll my child at Bunker Hill temporarily with maybe decent waitlist numbers at Ward 5 charters. I'll see what happens but did NOT list Shining Stars even though we prefer Montessori. I am in a local Facebook group where lots of excited parents are talking about matching at Shining Stars or having offers pending. None of these concerning conversations are happening there and I wonder why? Some parents are actively boosting, despite this recent incident.

Maybe let them know?

Nah SSMA bought it outright a few years back. It's in an old annual report of there's.

The worse a school is, the harder people try to boost it. Recruiting more parents is their only hope to get changes. Or in the case of SSMA, to survive.

This is so true. Boosting is a red flag. Parents who are content and trust the school don't boost.

Weird, I noticed today that multiple outlets and outdoor lights at Stoddert were covered and swathed with emergency tape. Must have a sent a district-wide memo to cover up anything slightly suspicious.

In the health and safety courses for teachers they actually talk about looking for live wires, exposed nails, splinters, any piles, and other things. Is it always the first thing on the teachers radar no but should they know when something needs to be repaired and to keep the children away.

I’ve been a DC teacher for a long time and have never had any health and safety classes.

I’ve never walked the premises of the playground to check for live wires. I don’t think you can blame the teacher for this.

Gosh, the state of the school buildings I taught in in DCPs - we had rats rotting in the walls. What do you expect teachers to do about the physical plant exactly? Obviously if you see something imminent, but multitudes of safety/sanitation threats with no recourse tbh.

There is no world in which a teacher, walking their students to recess, could stop the kids and leave then unattended to walk the playground looking for exposed wires, nails, or other potential hazards. Not to mention that the kids would miss their recess time. This kind of inspection should be regularly done and issues repaired immediately (or, when they cannot be, the area should be sealed off). Please stop blaming some of the hardest working professionals out there, teachers, for everything. I pray that child is okay.

What happened to the big playground rebuild they were promoting?
