Niagara Falls is exciting for about an hour.

But Buffalo, Niagara on the lake, and surrounding areas have more to do. Hiking at devils hole, speedboat, zip lines, funicular, bike riding, maid of the mist, mini golf... it's not just standing there looking at a waterfall unless that's what you want it to be.

I was going to say the same. I loved Niagara on the lake. Go biking there and wine tasting at one of their many vineyards (Konzelman has private yurts where we went for a tasting with our two boys who were 10 and 7). There's also Toronto which is not too far.

Olympic national park is stunning. I’d stick with it. Stay in Port Angeles a few nights, see Hurricane Ridge & go whale watching. We saw an entire pod of orcas. Then drive to Forks and stay there to explore the coast. So beautiful.

OP here. Thanks all - decided to stick with our original plan. Once I dropped the idea of trying to add the San Juan Islands in it all felt more manageable. 3 nights in Seattle, 3 nights in the Port Angeles area and 3 nights in the Forks area.

And for the poster that said my 13 year old was "demanding a different type of vacation" - not the case at all. We asked them if they had any thoughts about what we should do and he said "hmm, maybe something not so focused on the outdoors?" I'm hoping the time in Seattle (at a very cool, urban AirBnb) will help provide some balance.
