Maryvale and Sligo Creek ES French Immersion programs

Both of these schools have regional preferences, so, given the number of applicants, I think realistically you have a shot at one of them but not both. (You’ll get a WL number for both, but if outside the regional zone for one, your number will be below everyone else who is in the zone.)

What do you mean? Elaborate please.
We applied into 6!!! schools for twins for K, so 12 entries total.
ALL of them on WL, 45+. We are outside of the schools boundaries. Feel very sad ((((

I'm so sorry, I've been there.

This doc shows the regional preferences: https://docs.google.com/document/d/149SZ6uv91yE957PvFXQYhJ4cO4zZbMAVVuctLZmAKDU/preview

Even within the regional preference, many more people apply than there are spots for, so my point was that if you are outside the region there's really no shot at the lottery.

What programs did you have the lowest numbers? In my experience, 45 is within range for some schools, after school starts. Of course, I'm sure it's much more complicated decision with twins.

That link might not work but I found it when I clicked Programs at a Glance on this page.

My daughter got accepted to Maryvale. Is the program in K worth it? I heard they use a lot of computers and not much outside time. If you child is there. Do you like it?

This is true of MCPS in general. Are you comparing to your home public school or to a private option?

Are you interested in your child learning French in public school?

Our kid entered K in French via Zoom, so like all kids that year, they were “on computers” 100% of the time. Four years later they are testing at a B1 on the CEFR, which definitely would not have happened otherwise (and going from our experiences as American English speakers who started “foreign languages” later in school, but had no regular need to use them—probably ever.)

It sounds like you may not be aware that there is no real opting into this later. If you do not have some other means of getting your child to the required proficiency to test in (after winning the lottery *again*!)—you’ll be out of luck.

Good luck with the decision!

True, I am thinking of private. We are very tight on money but I am scared I am making my decision solely on economics and not the best option for her

Immersion is a pretty unique opportunity you most likely won’t be getting in private, save for a couple options in the broader region. It’s also an opportunity you won’t get back. If you’re enthusiastic about foreign language, I’d give it a try. You can always change your mind later and go private if MCPS isn’t working for you.
