Spoiled kids? Hostile to learning? I don’t know what college you’re thinking of, but it’s not UCSB.

Yes, it's more popular and wealthy now, but still a party school, and mentality. Don't kid yourself.

A lot of UC kids are spoiled and wealthy— I don’t think it’s specific to UCSB. UCs (all campuses) are also starting to take in more first gen kids. I mean, at any university there will be spoiled kids and also humble ones?

It's the clean-cut baked kids. Many steps up from ASU but same mentality. Of course, there are exceptions, but if your kid is one, that's what they're up against. UCSD has more serious students, cf the 'campus is dead' comments.

There’s a school for everyone.

My DC goes to another So Cal university, but has gone up to SB for the annual UCSB Deltopia party. The kids there know how to have a good time. At the same time, it's a solid school with a good education.

Isla Vista for Halloween is the best party you'll ever have.

Agree, just need to know how to sort.

I heard the party scene at UCSB sucks now. 12am noise curfew every night. High police presence during big events like Deltopia or Halloween. I suppose it’s for the safety of students but seems excessive to me.

Out of towners and local cc students are what’s really driving the partying. Still better than the non-existent parties at UCSD though.

Both are excellent schools and are more similar than different. I would use dorms and food as a tiebreaker, but that's just me

At this point, aren't the "spoiled and want to party" kids more likely to end up in a Cal State school than any UC?

Central Coast even split between Poly and UCSB. SD clear preference is SDSU.

Born and raised Los Angeles - I'd pick UCSB.

SDSU will eventually realize that it has been on a freight train into the abyss for a while. You can't pretend to be a serious academic institution when your only method of evaluating applicants is GPA (and maybe rigor, but not really). SDSU is suspected of rank ordering applicants based on reported GPA, so if it's your dream school, find one of those 6.0 max. GPA schools and get to work.

Shunning standardized testing, essays, and letters of recommendation simply means that you're backing up the truck for grade inflation zombies. Not sure how else to describe it, but it's a mixture of very good students and then the zombies that round out the class with high GPAs attained in low-competition schools.
