Where would a tween learn to use “they’re loaded” in reference to wealthy people?

Here’s the thing, over the last few months her parents are coming on strong to have their daughter visit my daughter. They live 90 minutes away door to door, so it’s quite an effort. My daughter is friends with wealthy peers because of the school she attends and an extracurricular activity she participates in. So factoring all of that in, an out of the blue comment about “loaded” people makes me wonder if they may be coaching her to orbit wealthy peers.

You are also making sure your DD gets lots of face time with filthy rich people. What an absolute pig of a hypocrite you are. Oh let me guess, your DD's friendships with moneybags are organic and totally not something your unconsciously encourage.

Indeed. OP’s kid goes to a rich kid school and is involved in a rich kid activity. Who in this story is trying to get in with the wealthy. I don’t think it is the niece or her parents! 🙄

The number of places she could have heard that is very large.

Reminds me of my mother. She always assumed other people were doing all these negative things. But, in reality she was doing those things. Not them. OP thought of this because that's exactly what she is doing.

I wonder what would be an acceptable way for the teen to notice wealth that wouldn't be gauche in OPs mind. Should she say "looks like they are hard workers". Or "they must have gone to a top 20 school and be very intelligent". Kids can notice affluence as well as anyone else and since they are kids without a fully functional filter, they may voice their observation out loud.

Heck, I’m an adult and sometimes encounter a house where I have a “I had no idea Jane was so rich” moment — and which I might feel free to express to my husband or best friend.

OP, are you concerned that your niece from some far-flung West Virginia trailer park is now mingling with your daughter's new polo-playing/lacrosse/helicopter skiing friends? And ruining your chances to easily slide into this world?

I’m pretty sure I said this as a kid. I’m surprised kids still say this.

We said this phrase growing up. It means that they must be wealthy. That’s all. This is perfectly normal.

Absolutely.

OP, you have been seen. This is one of the few threads on DCUM where posters are in agreement about what is really going on here.

If they said

"what do you think? Trust fund or high earners or savvy investment early on or mafia?"

Then I might wonder where she got it.

Loaded is a common expression.

I literally just asked my 11yo if she knew what “ they’re loaded” means and she said it means they have money. I’ve never used that expression as far as I remember. They’re out in the world OP, they pick stuff up.

You’re nuts.
