Where would a tween learn to use “they’re loaded” in reference to wealthy people?

My niece stayed with our daughter on Friday night and they in turn hung out at my daughter’s best friend’s house. When I drove them to that home, my niece says “wow, they’re loaded!” upon seeing their house. It caught me off guard. That’s pretty gauche and I’ve never heard a kid her age talk like that. Does that suggest her parents are fixated on people’s money and having those conversations with my niece present, maybe even coaching my niece to size up and befriend wealthy peers?

Yes! Definitely.

You sound insane.

She could have picked it up from a book, a movie, a tv show, overhearing peers talk, commercials.

That’s a pretty normal phrase. While an awkward thing to say in that situation, I’d be concerned if my tween didn’t know what it meant.

That's ridiculous. Nothing about a tween saying "they're loaded" is suprising. Maybe if a toddler said it, it'd be weird? Has nothing to do with parents grooming kids to be social/wealth climbers. They could easily have picked it up on a Disney show.

+100 That phase is used all of the time. It means nothing about how she is being raised.

Wow way to extrapolate!

Pretty normal phrase to use. I wouldn’t think anything of it.

+1 It’s a phrase that’s commonly used in spoken and written English in the U.S. by people over the age of 8 or so, and a perfectly normal thing to say to a family member upon seeing a sizable or fancy house. I can’t fathom why anyone would be surprised by this, much less leap to a conclusion that the teen is a gold-digger in training.

Normal. She could’ve heard it anywhere (tv movies book or from other kids at school)- common phrase.

This is an incredibly common phrase. Yes, gauche to speak it out loud but you are talking about a CHILD. What a bizarre conclusion you've come to.

OP, the only thing I see that is "suggested" here is by your post: you are looking for a reason to criticize your niece's parents.

Completely normal. Would have heard it in a million different places.
