NC State over UVA or VT. MUCH better industry connections |
+1 |
UGH USC is ridiculous to do OOS. Job prospects alone this is just stupid financially. Clemson is only good for Physics they have a great department. However getting into grad school or job after that again not as good as NC STATE. Yes NC state campus isn't awesome however education is what they are there fore and jobs and internships. Biggest downside to all of these is instate students are no where near the caliber of DMV students from public HS. |
Two of mine went there from MD. Because we used to live in Raleigh and they felt they wanted to go back. They both love sports and intramurals are huge at NC State. They both took PE all semesters. That they loved, LOL. I will be honest i was not a fan. Dorms, food, and campus itself yuck period there is no reality that is not true. Football games off campus also sucked. What was great was internships and job prospects. Changing majors wasn't difficult, most academic counseling was pretty good in the engineering school, not the business school that is awful. Supply Chain is a huge major for Business students. Mine were Electrical Eng/CS double majors. Then one got a graduate Degree in Textiles. Amazing program. What i will say is both got great jobs upon graduation. Both got great acceptances to fabulous higher-ranked schools for graduate work, which DS took advantage of. Both had internships that gave them great references years later. One of mine is 34 now she just became a CTO in Colorado on a reference from someone from her internship from NC State. Campus isn't far from Downtown Raleigh, getting to airport at RTP is a pain at breaks. Just like any college it has it's ups and downs. My kids felt they were very prepared for the coursework and maybe had one or two professors during the course of their time there that sucked. Good luck. |
The Amtrak train station is less than 3 miles from campus. It takes 5.5 hrs to get to the Alexandria, VA station (only 3 stops in between). So easy! |
That's one of the nicest train stations anywhere! |
Yes, and it's filled with students going home on breaks. Quite the vibe. I used to like to study on the train. |
The campus seems pretty nice to me…why do multiple people say it isn’t? Are you referring specifically to engineering? Is that located somewhere else than the main campus? |
Do you have evidence to support any of your claims? |
I was thinking the same thing! I thought it was really nice, except for the dorm area on the east end, which wasn't as nice. Maybe that's what they're referring to? The Hunt Library and the gym are probably the nicest I've ever seen anywhere. The engineering area is also extraordinarily nice, although it's a long walk/short shuttle ride from central campus, which I also found to be nice I'd also like to know why so many posters are saying it's not nice. |
Accepted EA, MD public for CS
1550, 4.0 u/w Will attend UMD, but if that hadn’t worked out it would have been a close call between NC St & VT. Have a very favorable impression of NC St & Raleigh has a great job market. |
Congrats!!
4.0 UW? How does that happen?? As in each and every course over 4 years of high school? |
You make a good point, but it should be clarified that the strong preference for top privates & out of state publics is common only in certain states: the northeast, Illinois, & California mostly. For example, good students in Indiana are commonly focused on getting in Indiana U or Purdue. Few are intent on getting in Northwestern or Michigan. I went to IU for a while, & was surprised how Notre Dame (which is in the same state) was almost completely overlooked when students talked about where they had applied for undergrad or where they were intending to apply for grad school. |
Correct. That's how you get a 4.0. |
OOS, Biology, 4.25, 1400, waitlisted EA |
