Dont hear much about NC state in this board. Pretty good STEM program.
Any recent stats on admits/wl/rejects? |
Talk to people in NC.
It is not as well regarded there for top STEM. For Chem, Bio, math , UNCCH is much better. For Engineering, as UNC does not really have it, NCstate is better. However, the top engineering talent in NC HSs usually leave the state and go to T20 unis /GaTech / Mich, and if they have any amount of financial need, they usually pay same or LESS than instate at NC state, for a much better education. |
It's ranked fairly highly overall...I get it doesn't have the same cachet as UNC CH, but seems like a great option for in-state. I really liked the campus and location. |
You are describing a situation that is common in every state. Kids with the money and credentials want to go to top privates or one of the top Publics OOS. Comparing to VA, UNC-CH is the UVA of NC, albeit a bit larger and more extensive in its coverage of STEM. NC State is the Virginia Tech equivalent. Blah campus though.. |
3.3/3.8, 1500. Waitlisted. Applied for CS and Business (2nd choice). Kid did not want to send in a LOCI (I think all he had to was click a button and upload mid-year grades) since he'd already gotten into other schools he liked and ended up getting rejected. |
It's very analogous to how Virginians (and beyond) view UVA/VT. UVA being the state flagship and VT being considered the state STEM flagship. Yes, UVA has engineering, math, statistics, physics, etc... but those of us in industry know that VT is more rigorous and produces better prepared grads for things like that. Same situation in NC. Perceived prestige-wise, UVA/UNC probably have an edge, but the STEM industry doesn't go by prestige as much as other industries. NC State's stem grads are highly sought after and have a huge alumni base in the heavily techy local/regional area. Plus, Raleigh is just a really nice place to live with so many opportunities both during college and after graduation. I guess it just all depends on where you want to end up and how much you want to spend. Whether you go to NCState, GT or UMich, whether you get a job depends on how you do in school, the career center, and alumni base. NC State has the largest stem career fairs and alumni network in the state, so there's that. And there's a sizeable alumni network in VA too. |
Waitlisted. 4.4 GPA, 1550 SAT. I'm from Virginia, though, and they only accept like 10% from out of state, but I'm pretty sure I would have been admitted if I was in state. |
Not the kids on here 😂. Did you do EA or RD? |
I'm guessing you applied for something like engineering or cs, right? It's actually pretty competitive for us in-staters going for STEM majors as well. A local with your stats wouldn't be a shoe-in either, unfortunately. Maybe 5-10 years ago, but not now. It's crazy competitive now. With Apple's east coast HQ coming to RTP soon, the game has changed. |
Sounds a lot like VT, unless you're first gen. Not the Apple part though. That's cool! But is it actually true? That's crazy! That'll be like a magnet for other companies. |
My DD was admitted in the EA round from Fairfax. 1510 SAT, 4.37 GPA, varsity sports, other regular ECs. She's excited to attend this fall for CS. |
RD. I probably should have gotten my act together and EA'd. In any event, I got into my first choice (VT). To that other question, I applied MechE, so Apple and its downstream effect, wasn't really a factor for me anyway. |
DS (from MD) was admitted EA 4.3 GPA 1430 SAT (good ECs) engineering. We were very impressed with NC State after visiting. Great engineering facilities and very nice campus. |
DD from VA in w/4.3 GPA, 1510 SAT, varsity sport captain, club leader, p/t job. Applied EA for applied math. |
My DS was deferred EA and then rejected for the business school. 4.0W/3.7UW. Legacy and OOS. Got into VT so no big deal in the end. |
