Pick a school for DD

PS I should clarify I lived in Tampa for a while. Aside from really bad traffic, it was easy and pleasant.

My child is a freshman at Tampa and is happy there. The classes are small and we’ve been happy with the education. The housing is not guaranteed though and it’s a pricy area, but my child has received housing the first two year. I’m not familiar with the other two schools. Good luck!

A few years ago, a Jesuit priest friend who taught at several Jesuit colleges told me that he thought Scranton was the hidden treasure. He said georgetown and BC get the attention, but Scranton provides a great education and has a nice community of faculty and students. I don't know much about the others, but this recommendation was memorable.

Fairfield (waitlisted)

Waiting on TCNJ (probably in) and BC (probably not in).

I would take my chances on waitlist for Fairfield and obviously if in at BC go there.

Next would be Tampa and Scranton last.

I'd do Tampa in a heartbeat. But I'm from FL originally and greatly prefer that weather to the Northeast. Does your DD not have a strong preference about that?

I’m not as familiar with all the schools but what we used to decide:

-Cost of attendance
-graduation rate at least 80%
- where want to work after graduating and if any school had an advantage /disadvantage
- career preparation - strength of program, internships/opportunities to gain experience (sometimes built into major or you see they have a course or club where get they can get that expertise), and alumni network

Usually it’s a trade off with cost and the other things but as long as the cost was within our budget we had our child pick the school that best met the other items.

Look at the colleges’ Instagram acceptance accounts and who DD can see going to school with. Mine wrote off some schools for the tasteless bikini shots on the acceptance pages. She said that wasn’t the type of girls she wanted as her peers.

Probably because they were hotter girls and intimidated your daughter.

If a school attracts mean girls like you, then kids should steer clear

I'm curious, based on what? What exactly is your personal knowledge and experience with each of these schools?

Ah, there it is. I knew it would show up eventually

Are you also the person who calls people “geeds” in the Greek life threads?

OP this site has been taken over by southern state culture warriors. Take much of the foregoing cheerleading for Tampa with a grain of salt. You're looking for the best education for four (expensive) years, not a fun winter getaway.

Tampa is by a considerable margin the least good university on your list -- worst overall rankings, lowest scores and GPAs for incoming freshman, lowest graduation rate (which suggests a significantly greater portion of Tampa students either aren't able or aren't interested in sticking around through graduation - neither a great reflection on the school), lowest starting salary for graduates. And the gaps aren't small relative to Scranton and TCNJ (and are huge relative to Fairfield). When a student graduates from Tampa (or rather, if a student graduates from Tampa, because less three out of five do), s/he earns only three dollars for every four dollars a Scranton grad makes. You and your daughter should focus on that rather than "awesome weather."

I know some recent Scranton grads in DC who are smart, accomplished, and hugely loyal to the school. Only know of TCNJ by (generally positive) reputation, but i think of your three admits/likely, Scranton is a great choice. And then should the Fairfield WL come through, Fairfield is really in kind of in a different league and a special place.
