Are you a beach person?

Anonymous
Nope. As an adult, I’ve never done a beach vacation. My husband’s from MO and our honeymoon in Malta was the first time he’d been in an ocean. I grew up in NC and went to Kiawah a lot as a kid. Also lived on the Gulf Coast in FL and my parents live in Charleston. Still don’t like the beach.

No!

I like rocky shore (Maine), mountains (Vermont, Adirondacks, Colorado), cities (NYC, London, Paris).

I go to a beach and complain for the next six months about finding sand in everything I own (including stuff that never went to the beach -- don't ask me how).

This thread is sad. I come from a long line of "beach people" as does my husband and we are raising the same. There is just no peace in the world to me like the beach. Even when my kids were tiny they could be happy there for hours and hours and then get the best nights sleep after.

I’ve only met one person who said they were a desert person. They hike the Grand Canyon 4 times a year—in each season.

I’m a beach person. I love the ocean—whether I’m on the beach with my feet in the sand or on a boat or cruise ship. Like Jimmy Buffet sings, “The ocean is my only medication.”

I am all of those things. I live at the beach in the summer, do several ski trips a season in the winter, and when we travel, especially to Europe but also in the US, we usually do cities/museums. I'm not even sure I have a preference - each thing has its season or place.

Why is it sad that other people.have different preferences? I am not a beach person but I understand and respect that others are. I have actually been surprised as an adult by how much I have enjoyed being in mountains. Different strokes, etc

See, I don't think they "have different preferences." I think they were not properly taught how to enjoy a beach vacation and don't have the fundamental core memories with family at the beach as a small child.

Dude, no. Just no.

I like sitting on a balcony and watching the waves. I like walking on the boardwalk and popping in and out of junky stores. I like fresh seafood dinners.

I hate roasting on the sand, being subjected to other people's music and conversations, and wearing a bathing suit. I guess I am a beach-adjacent person.

Will you hate your children if they don't share your preference for beaches once they're out of your control? Their spouses? Their children?

I find your declaration of sadness absurd (and not amusing absurd).

Replace "beach" with opera, artichokes, cigars, novels by Pynchon or Foster Wallace, Schoenberg, colonic therapy, etc. Repeat until enlightenment.

Yes and no. I love the beach…sound, smell, waves, walking down the shoreline. But spending all day out there, no. I just can’t do it.

I’m a Caribbean beach person. That means soft sand, Bluewater, and no big waves..

If I’m on a beach vacation- I expect an easy walk to the beach, to swim in the ocean, walk along the beach, sit in the shade, picnic on the beach, etc. I’m just drawn to the water and find the ocean soothing and healing.

And I’ve become an ocean snob because even as a child, our modest family vacations were to
an oceanside motel in a resort town. So I’m not interested in packing up a car or boarding a shuttle to get to a pool or the ocean.

My ILs bought a condo that is a 20-30 minute drive to the ocean and wonder why no one wants to stay there for a beach vacation.

I grew up near the beach. I like to walk there and go for short swims but could never stay there all day getting burned.

I am absolutely a beach person and up until maybe 10 years ago, I could stay on the beach in the sun all day. But now I’m on medication that makes me sensitive to the sun and super hot weather so I just can’t do it any longer. I’ll walk on the beach in the spring and fall if I;m there.
