Sure,Jan. PG county has built in asynchronous days into their 180 day calendar and you don’t hear their parents complaining. Deal with it. Or move.

Who is Jan and why do you keep ascribing posts to her?

If your child asked me for the work in advance, I would provide it. Please don’t wait until the day you leave.

I would also give your child an opportunity to make up the work when they return from this trip.

Please send me a cool postcard or a photo of your child at a historical site or engaged in a cultural activity.

This is high school and advanced classes. No way to understand how that would work or who to ask.

If your child is in high school and in advanced classes, I’m sure he is more than capable of figuring this out on his own. Chill out mom!

I think you should be the one moving so you can do all the asynchronous 'teaching' you want.

Not a teacher, just a parent who has evolved past 1998. You should try it.

Take it up with MSDE. They approved asynchronous days.

It was always a bad idea, but this in particular was not what they had in mind. MSDE needs to change this. Districts like MCPS can't be trusted with virtual options.

This is exactly what they had in mind. Up to 8 virtual days can be repurposed from inclement weather. 3 of those virtual days can be asynchronous. I think you'll find many more in support if this than those against. Very few want to keep adding on in-person days in June.

It’s going to be a single assignment for each class and will probably be something light, even for very advanced classes since teachers won’t be available to assist. I myself teach advanced classes and will likely ask students to read or watch a video and then practice evaluating claims and citing evidence.

Ask your child’s teachers. Or better yet, have your child email their teachers right now with the details.

“Dear Mr. Loud,

My family will visit Tajikistan for roughly three weeks beginning 4/15. This is my first opportunity to meet my grandparents on both sides of the family. As they are in their eighties and in frail health, this trip is especially crucial to my family and my emotional well-being.

As you may be aware, the snow day makeup will be an asynchronous day on 4/22. At that point, I will be in my grandparents’ rural province with no way to access Canvas to complete any assignments.

Would you be willing to give me the work in advance so I could complete it on or before 4/14?

If that is not possible, would you be willing to allow me to make up the work when I return to school on 5/3?

Thank you.”

Repeat for each teacher. “Dear Mrs. Tall…” “Dear Dr. Funny…”

Ha, not as isolated as a village in Tajikistan. We’ll have easy internet access but I believe that Canvas is blocked outside the US. Particularly frustrating as kid would prefer to get the work done.

Damn. I wanted an extra day tacked on in June.

No this is better - will be oven assignments to do at your leisure. I’m planning on skipping them for my K student.

Virtual days were intended for snow days when students could not make it to schools. Not for days when teachers didn't want to teach.

It’s still not being used for that purpose so you don’t have to worry.

When a teacher —even an ill one— can unilaterally decide they want a particular day to be asynchronous, I’ll back your complaint.

Ha. You'll get far better feedback on asynchronous work in April than a last day in June .

I can’t imagine many teachers would find the MCPS-required professional development preferable to being in the classroom with their students.

New York City schools just tried to do a remote learning day in lieu of a traditional snow day. To the surprise of no one who actually knows what it takes to do virtual instruction well, it failed abysmally: https://apnews.com/article/school-snow-day-remote-learning-2ef89fedcd4caefc3d6b6c483188e888

It’s just one day! Who cares!?

Agree.

I’m genuinely surprised to see so many complaints about the mildest possible calendar tweak they could make.
