How many days off does it take to have an impact? |
MCPS breaking the law? What else is new? |
If it was a "negotiation" what did MCEA give up for it? Or did they just ask? |
That's nice for the teachers, but I'm talking about for the students and their families. Passover begins that evening but the hours during the day before sunset are used to clean the house and prepare. This decision is all very tone deaf. |
The students' work is asynchronous. They can do it on Sunday if they would like to. |
| Will this mean that childcare usually provided during a no school day (before/after care provider who offers the full day of care) would not be offering a full day program that day since technically it’s now a “school day”? |
They got to avoid adding back an instructional day. |
So they didn't negotiate anything. |
It's not like the work is going to magically appear on Monday morning since it's asynchronous. I am sure most teachers will have it up way ahead, and the kids can do it on the weekend. |
No, it's not. There are many minority faiths that have their *ONE* allowed holiday made into teacher grading days if they are lucky (Diwali, Eid, Lunar New Year,) or often just dropped from the calendar altogether. Regardless my kids almost always get hw on Diwali. What's more - a very big holiday called Vijayadashami - which is literally supposed to be a day off from learning - is never given off. I pull my kids out; I always have, and several other families we know do too. We tell the teachers and they give the kids an extra day to finish - in other words,it's excused. You can do that as well. |
1 extra day to make up work is not the policy and may not even be sufficient. When a child misses a day of school, they may not have sufficient time in a single day to make up the work and do the regular work for that day! Also, you were extremely generous in your reply about the false claim of antisemitism when you didn’t point out that students already get TWO Jewish high holidays off. |
| Hey, our day off just stayed a day off! As long as folks who need it have childcare and other supports, I'm totally OK with school telling DCs to do something and our family basically ignoring it until the last second. *shrug* |
It's a day the parents do the school's job. And if they kid doesn't have parents who will do it then that kid misses out. |
Hands up, all parents and guardians who are planning to homeschool that day? I'm personally planning to send DCs outside with their friends. What I care about is that the families who need childcare or MCPS services that day will receive the support that they need. I don't give a hang what 'work' is being asked for. DCs will fill it in whenever. But we're sure as heck not going to create Special Family Learning Day. Had more than enough of that during lockdown. |
Then, IMO, it should be an excused absence for you. In past years, are kids always off on the day of the evening that Passover begins? |
