"Don't listen to anyone who is older than 21"

Anonymous
In the year 2024, you need to just hire a private admissions consultant for your kid, especially if they go to a private school filled with hooked kids. A private consultant tries to guide your kid to the best possible outcome and gives them honest advice, whereas a school counselor wants the best possible outcome for the school. They want 5 kids to matriculate to Yale, but they don't necessarily care which 5, and they certainly play favorites with certain kids.

The counselors at the private schools are excellent and you're already paying for them.

Yes, but as PP noted, their concern is the class as a whole. A counselor your hire for your family cares about YOUR kid's outcome. There is a difference.

They’re necessary but not sufficient.

What a pretentious loser.
So by his account the kid shouldn’t listen to him either.
