Marketing Major

OP here. Thank you to the marketing professionals weighing in - I'm appreciating more and more the wide-ranging skills needed and how dynamic the field of marketing is.

It sounds like a business/marketing degree is a viable path but that internships will be key and that it's important to cultivate skills in several areas to be successful.

After talking to many professional journalists, decided to do marketing/PR. DC is a college senior and getting a double major: business marketing (in the business school) and communications (in liberal arts school). DC has had great internships in NYC for two summers (top PR firms) and last summer’s internship hired DC to start entry level job immediately after graduation. YMMV

What a great combination of two majors!

Marketing major(or concentration) is always almost under the school/college of business.

Marketing major is the weakest major/concentration in business school

Do analytics type major/concentration, and take some marketing related classes for electives.

People asking here usually don't have fancy connections.
Kids need to accomplish things on their own.

This is the best advice on the thread so far.

It's a good field -- not a dying one. There are many directions you can take it in. It's not art + graphic design, although someone with that degree may eventually find work in a marketing department.

I would do this -- encourage a double major with marketing and SOMETHING. Psychology is a common second major. Spanish if they're good at it. Data analytics if they have the math chops.

Any university with a decent business school should meet all these guidelines.

especially if your kid can't get into a competitive business school.
you need to show more hard skills.

If the kid wants to major in Marketing, go for it! The Accounting and Finance classes will be part of any undergraduate degree. Throw in some data science and you're good.

There are tons of undergraduate majors. Not everything is STEM and CS.
