It has worked out for my DC. In high school, DC really wanted to be a journalist. DC is an exceptional writer. After talking to many professional journalists, decided to do marketing/PR. DC is a college senior and getting a double major: business marketing (in the business school) and communications (in liberal arts school). DC has had great internships in NYC for two summers (top PR firms) and last summer’s internship hired DC to start entry level job immediately after graduation. YMMV
This is the best advice on the thread so far. It's a good field -- not a dying one. There are many directions you can take it in. It's not art + graphic design, although someone with that degree may eventually find work in a marketing department. I would do this -- encourage a double major with marketing and SOMETHING. Psychology is a common second major. Spanish if they're good at it. Data analytics if they have the math chops. Any university with a decent business school should meet all these guidelines.
