But what do you mean by “comparable”? Any state school will give you an excellent education for much cheaper. What exactly are you getting for 2 or 3x the price?

Again, please find me an excellent state school that costs $30k OOS. Please!

Florida state

was just coming in to say University of Florida.

Well the assumption is that a high stats kid will be getting plenty of merit aid.

Again - name some names please. Tell me the names of the excellent public universities that will give my high stats DC kids enough merit aid to make the cost $30k. Because many of us have been at this search for years and still haven’t found such a thing.

Michigan State is ranked 60th. They give 15k merit scholarships plus 5k for Honors college. That brings tuition down to about 33k. They have an amazing alumni network and study abroad programs. It’s a great school.

Florida state is ranked 53rd. Their OOS tuition is 21K (not sure about room and board).

I can find more if you want.

Half of the 83k OP is complaining about is room and board. Florida is 45k with room and board. Michigan state is Michigan state, which is not comparable to Tufts. Michigan is comparable to Tufts and is 76k for the first two years and 80k for the last two years

Why is Michigan State not comparable to Tufts? Other than name recognition, no one can say why Tufts is so superior.

One is small private university in New England, the other is a large land grant university in Michigan. How are they comparable other than both awarding bachelors degrees?

We’re talking about quality of education. I mean if you want to pay 80K to be in Boston at a small school, then kudos to you. But others were asking for excellent state schools that are cheaper and I provided two examples.

LOL Florida State is not equivalent to Tufts

Can you articulate why? This is what I’m trying to get at and no one can give a concrete answer.

What school does your child go to? What does a Better school in your county or district have that yours doesn't? ......... same thing for colleges really.

An honest person, finally!
It’s a wealthy cohort. That’s what you’re paying for. Makes sense.

My kid it as Blair. With the poors. And doing great. I guess what’s why I don’t understand paying 80k. We’re ok with the economic diversity.

So how are they comparable? What makes the quality of education at Michigan State comparable to Tufts?

That’s what I’m asking. People seem to think that Tufts is superior. I haven’t seen any quantifiable evidence that the education itself is that much better. Until I do, I don’t see a difference with most colleges. And I don’t see the point of paying so much for location or name brand. But that’s just me.

So stay on that path for college. Why do you care why a Sidwell parent would want to pay for private college? You're living in different worlds.

Someone please tell me how this is (or any school) is worth almost 90K. What are you exactly getting that you can’t get elsewhere for 1/2 or 1/3 the price?

If people will pay it, then that's what it's worth. Education pricing in the US is driven by the market

I mean I get that, but I’m just curious as to what people who are willing to pay think they’re getting out of it, more so than a much cheaper school.

Can you name a comparable school that costs 29k a year all in? OP said there were schools at the price, but can anyone name one?

The key issue is the definition of comparable. If the definition is an institution that will grant a bachelor's degree in the desired field of study, there are likely plenty.

UNC OOS with DC tuition credit.

We are facing this now. My child is in athletic recruiting and has the grades for the high academic schools like Tufts. And is getting significant interest (weeding down the choices now). And it looks like, despite the positive prereads on grades, we are going to have to pass on those schools. Some offer a bit of merit but most offer nothing. And those that do, it's not enough to offset that sort of price tag for working parents, even ones with decent salaries. Our 592 would be wiped out in 2 years or less.

It's incredibly frustrating b/c my kid has a rigorous schedule, with amazing grades, offers a lot in the sport and other ECs, and some of these schools are fantastic fits. But, we're going to have to pass b/c we just cannot swing that sort of money. And, yes, we expected that some would not offer merit and we could deal with that via other means (like scholarships) but those are hard to come by too, we are finding. Too many people need money. Too many smart kids competing for that money. Just not enough to go around.

It’s pure curiosity. I am intrigued by the willingness to spend so much. We could if we had to, but this isn’t mandatory so we won’t.

Michigan State has a student to faculty ration of 12:1. Tufts is 6:1.

Is Tufts, BC, NYU, USC, Villanova, U Miami, U Wash, Pomona, worth it!? I mean, is a Chanel bag worth it?! Thousands of parents can pay these schools full freight and not blink an eye.
If price matters to you, do your value shopping for the college that's in your budget.

I’d wager to guess 95% don’t think a Chanel bag is worth it and haven’t bought one. Even though we have the money. So if the question is, will someone pay this? Sure. But is it worth it, 95% of us have voted with our checkbook on the Chanel bag question.

Now .. is college a Chanel bag? That’s a different question. Not all are. But sure, some are. Some are def overvalued. Some are being bought for the label.
