The sequel pretty tame if you want to start with that (cuss words when flying, but more innocent kissing scenes). |
Yes, just fast forward through the love scene. My son has been watching since 5 but all he cares about are the airplanes. Navy. Family. Your kid has been exposed to worse at school.
Maverick has barely a love scene. |
The new one is totally appropriate for an 11 year old |
Another one who was not allowed to watch anything mildly inappropriate, and had to wait until I was 13 to see PG-13. This started years of lying to my parents about which movie I was actually going to when I went with friends to a movie. And the stuff I saw at other people's house...wasn't filling them in on that, either.
There's a lot of space between porn/smut and Top Gun (1 or Maverick). |
That’s too bad but not all kids resort to that. Luckily that can’t happen as much now because parents usually buy the tickets and reserve seats ahead of time. Plus kids these days aren’t just going to the movies as much as it’s so expensive. Most of the boys are really just getting together to play video games at someone’s house these days. Kids have less free time now with scheduled activities/homework on weekends. |
I wouldn’t let my kid watch “porn or smut” but CSM will give a movie a higher age rating based on things like cursing or smoking, things I can easily talk to my kid about |
Hell to the yes. OMG who are you? There's no explicit nudity just language and inference - it was a hot love scene but nothing about it was explicit which is what made it so hot! And honestly it's like about 95% flying. |
Of course I would. What are you afraid of? |
Ridiculous answer. He’s 11 not 2. Watch the movie and relax people. |
Silly. Is an 11 yo this sheltered? 13? Insane. |
Thank you for all the replies. I think we will go forward with seeing both the original and the sequel. I completely forgot there was part 2, so I assumed DS was talking about the original Top Gun.
I saw the movie when I was very young and cannot recall anything inappropriate. But, as my kids start watching some of the older movies I get surprised by my vague warm and fuzzy memories vs. the actual content that might be considered inappropriate today ![]() Also, I am from Europe originally and come from a family with very relaxed attitude towards movies and TV content. I am not talking about porn here ![]() Things are now different both in the US and Europe, so I follow common sense media and similar recommendations. I was surprised about their warnings about language and “romantic” content, hence my question here. Like I said, my DS is fascinated with planes and pilots and I don’t think he will care about brief kissing here and there. Curse words are something else, but I will just emphasize the usual that not everything we hear should be repeated. |
If it wasn’t inappropriate before it’s not today. 11yr olds are either in MS or on their way. Trust me, they will hear worse there. |
Great movie |
Lol |
By 6th grade they should know about ‘the birds and the bees’ anyway. Also, they already know swear words. DC heard all the swear words at school in 4th grade. |
