It’s truly a witch hunt at this point to silence anyone who criticizes the death and destruction going on in Gaza at the hands of the Israeli military and in the name of the Israeli government.

Unfortunately it’s unsafe to speak up against Israel’s actions because of this type of crusade.

You can speak up but a) you can’t call for the destruction of Israel/support massacres of Jews and b) use images of your students in you social media, especially when accompanied by political statements repugnant to at least some of those students.

But it's ok to support the destruction of Palestinians? Then how about suspending all the MCPS teachers who actively support Israel by posting pro-Israel messages on social media, participate in fund-raising for Israeli causes, attend synagogues that hang the Israeli flag and that post signs "I stand with Israel?"

1) no one wants the destruction of Palestians. No one. Some want the destruction of Hamas.
2) did you seriously just suggest it is appropriate to suspend MCPS teachers who attend their local place of worship that happens to fly a flag? Would it be appropriate for MCPS to suspend MCPS teachers who attend churches that happen to fly Ukrainian flags? Are actual Israeli teachers allowed to say they stand with Israel?

Turn everything you said around and switch Palestine for Israel, and ask if it’s fair? Because that’s how MCPS is treating criticism of Israel.

You CAN’T turn it around. Know why? Because nobody in DC are calling for the destruction of Palestine or Palestinians. The pro-Palestine posts this teacher makes expressly calls for the destruction of Israel and uses a phrase that by now is well-known to call for death to Jews.

No it doesn’t and she doesn’t. The only people who claim that phrase means what you say it means are Israeli supporters. Palestinians have made it clear repeatedly and over decades its about freedom.

Her post is clearly and obviously calling for the destruction of Israel.

So instead of listening to what people say you are ascribing your own political motives? That sounds rather Trumpian.

lol at “listening to what people say.” clearly you have zero interest in what Jewish students & families say, which is that this kind of post by a teacher creates an atmosphere of fear.

Please please inform yourself, for the sake of your conscience and your children. I know Jews are traumatized by the centuries of persecution and I truly feel for all my Jewish friends who have been scared and brainwashed into thinking this way. But the Israeli flag itself is a celebration of the destruction of Palestine and the Palestinians. The Israeli flag represents a state that was created from scratch in the 1900s on the rubble of a prior nation. It's fine if you're ok with that, we live in the real world after all, and it's the same thing that happened in the United States hundreds of years ago. But don't pretend that Palestine was not actively and intentionally destroyed by Jews who wanted a homeland.

Israel is acting in self-defense after the 10/7 attacks, just like any nation in any part of the globe would do. Hamas brought this down on its own people and adamantly refuses to do what is necessary to restore peace. The greater evil here is Hamas.

Alrighty. If the Israeli flag alone is hate speech then everything this lady said is hate speech. Heck the US flag is hate speech by that logic. You truly sound like an anti-semitic fool, one step away from saying what you think - that merely being Jewish is a hate crime.

Or maybe you were on to something in the first half. Everyone of us on this this thread is sitting on land won by genocide.

Being "Anti-genocide", as a non-Native resident of USA descended from voluntary immigrants, is privileged hypocrisy.

Do you think the response (killing tens of thousands of civilians and destroying most of Gaza, including hospitals) is proportionate? Interested to know. And if it is proportionate, when does it stop being so? When 100,000 are dead? A million? More?

I think war always involves civilian death. Israel is not targeting civilians but Hamas is. If you don’t like this, criticize Hamas for starting the war by targeting civilians.

Again - do you think the Israeli response is proportionate? How many more tens of thousands of civilians can they kill before you might concede that not all of their actions should be blindly supported?

I’m not a military tactician so I can’t say. I surely can’t label it disproportional. They suffered an extremely severe territorial incursion. And of course, Hamas could surrender. The calls for ceasefire are curiously one-sided.

You probably think the Houthis are freedom fighters too.

Well this is the point. Public employees do not have unlimited 1A rights. They cannot engage in speech that disrupts their ability to work. This is clearly an extremely contentious issue and it is not too much to ask teachers to be more circumspect. And it is obviously wholly inappropriate to make your controversial statements using images of your students!
