What a dumba$$ comment. They want to make money. That's the only objective of selling! |
The pp was probably referring to FUBU or that handbag like that is supposedly only intended for Black people (remember the backlash when white women were clamoring for them?). |
+1 and even worse if you wear sandals as shown on the model. |
| I don’t think it’s cultural appropriation. But people will think your Brazilian, not that there’s anything wrong with that. |
+1 it’s a dumba$$ and racist comment. |
| I cannot even believe what I just read. SMH.... |
What? Are you okay? Truly, I need to know! |
I don't think people will think she is Brazilian; no one from Brazil would wear that, or at least, fewer pepole would just like people from WAshnigton, DC don't wear sweatshirts that say "Washington, DC." At the same time, it seems like you are begging to be asked about Brazil, so I would be ready to awkwardly explain you have no connectiion to Brazil (e.g., you didn't lose your bags while in transit and just had to buy whatever the hotel gift shop was carrying) but were still attracted to the dress. Come to think of it, why ARE You attracted to a dress that has the name of acountry you have never been to so huge on it? |
Exactly. This dress says "I'm not from Brazil." But that's fine -- it's a casual, graphic fast fashion piece of clothing, and if that's what you want, that's fine. |
Woah, I didn't mean to be controversial. I said that because my entire Brazilian side of the family wears clothes with Brazil and Brazilian (yellow and green) colors all over them. |
Seems like this was OP's actual question. It had her flustered so she thought, this must be what appropriation feels like...her instinct isn't wrong, wearing a random postcard scaled to that size will generate conversation and probably will feel awkward. |
|
PS: What I don't understand is that there is nothing of Brazilian culture about this. Literally the only things remotely Brazilian about it is the word "Brazil" and that it's not long-sleeved wool or something.
I think you know this, OP. Saris are traditional garments, There is a history and historical significance. Same for dashikis. They are a part of the culture of those places, which is why they can be considered as a part of cultural appropriation. This dress is US mall culture, if anything. Were you really asking in good faith, or is this some kind of joke? Or were you trying to make some kind of veiled point? |
I love Farm Rio. Such beautiful colors and patterns. No it’s not cultural appropriation. |
| Farm Rio is ugly. End of thread. |
| I never heard of the brand but it looks like something from a souvenir shop in Brazil or a Brazilian airport. |
