Cultural Appropriation With This Dress

Anonymous
I have fallen in love with this dress. But I am not Brazilian and have never been to Brazil. Is it inappropriate for me to wear this? I so rarely fall this hard for an article of clothing -- but I'm worried about it being inappropriate. Sofi Tukker is my favorite band, fwiw, lol.

Opinions?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that isn't any specifically valued or sacred or special image for Brazilians, is it? It's just the word "Brazil" and some pop culture-ish black and white images. It's not traditional dress or anything.

I think it's just fast fashion using the word "Brazil."

Cultural appropriation is a made up offense.

Farm Rio is a Brazilian brand. I doubt they would make a product they don’t want people to buy.

OP here. Yeah, there's certainly nothing sacred about it -- it's not like, I don't know, wearing a yinyang without knowing what it is or something. But saris and dashiki aren't sacred either, and it could be considered culturally insensitive to just wear one because you like the way it looks. I guess this is more like how in another post people were attacking people's kids for wearing college sweatshirts that are for colleges that they most certainly won't get into.

They're traditional dress, though. There is cultural heritage there. There is nothing traditional about this at all, right?

There is no such thing as cultural appropriation. It’s a bunch of hooey. Wear what you want and be proud.

Wut.

This is America. You can wear whatever the f$ck you want.

If you wear that I'm simply going to question your taste in clothing. Cultural appropriation would be the least of my concerns wearing that out in public.

Not a safe assumption. I know of some brands that are only for the right demographic, not for the wrong people.

Other than "Brazil" being printed on that dress, it has absolutely nothing to do with Brazil.

Definitely. It’s insulting assuming the OP doesn’t know that. But the OP is kind to ask if others may be offended.

It's nice. Wear it.

Plenty of clothing says "Paris" that is on the US market.
