Annoying things people make their whole personality

I come from a poor and deeply dysfunctional family and am relatively successful. DH knows and a very close friend. No one else needs to know about my messed up family.

You are supposed to travel for yourself, not for bragging rights, but travel has somehow turned into a bragging rights thing, which is shameful.

Just last week I had some lady rail off a list of continents, countries, and cities she had traveled to. No insights, no stories…I guess the list was supposed to be the interesting part?

Do we know the same person? I ran into something I hadn’t seen in a long time and the first thing she told me was “I’ve been to 19 countries” since retiring.

OMG, yes. Also telling everyone about your anxiety, nerdiness and introversion, talking about all of it often and without fear.

Good one. This feels worse in the DMV, too -- people are competitive about travel in a way that just makes no sense to me. That recent thread about private school parents bragging about their holiday travel plans was so cringey and so recognizable.

A related DMV personality is the "international" person, where their whole personality is about how many non-Americans they know, how much time they spend abroad, etc. It's such a peculiar vibe. I am NOT a super patriotic person but it is weird when I meet people from like Ohio or Illinois who desperately need me to know that they lived Germany for work for a year or that their friends are all foreigners like that's somehow more impressive than having worked in Seattle and having friends from Chicago. Just... who cares.

Any niche sport/workout people. The Orange Theory people, the Pure Barre people, the "aerialists" (lady you're 45 and pay someone a few hundred dollars a week to show you how do do a half split on aerial fabric, you are not an aerialist), and of course, the original workout cult: Spin Cycle people.

You can add all the niche diet/cleanse people. If you fast for 23/24 hours and only eat raw macrobiotic food, for example.

The lemonade/cider vinegar/cayenne pepper cleanse people.

People who go on 30-day cleanses.

The kind of cancer survivors who use it as a trump card or demand that everybody praise their courage. Persevering through medical treatment is an amazing thing, I am sincerely happy for them and wish all the best. But people survive all kinds of life threatening conditions without making it their identity.
