are you concerned about crime as a parent?

ugh this is so scary. I have a fear of being carjacked getting my kid in and out of the car. I feel like we have always been taught to pay attention to your surroundings, leave as soon as you get in your car... but when you are getting the kid in the car seat your back is turned and its hard to pay attention to anything else. There was a carjacking in front of my friends building SW... i dont go there after dark any more.

Carjackings in DC are going to get much worse in 2024.

All crime in DC will get much worse before it gets better. There are no serious plans to reduce crime.

The DC government plans claiming to “address” crime stand ZERO chance of reducing crime.

My kids are too young to use public transit by themselves (elementary school) but we take bus and Metro frequently and have never had an issue. I have trained them not to stare at someone with mental issues and to follow my lead on public transit- if I say let’s get off and change cars they listen without hesitation. But we have only had to do that maybe 2 times.

I can’t imagine needing to raise kids like this. It must be so stressful for them, especially at that age.

What reason do you give them during your “training” for why you avoid homeless people? That they might attack you?

I'm not PP, but training your kids not to stare at people is just like...basic social skills. You don't need to tell them "it's because they might attack you," you can just say it's rude and people don't like it. Same with pointing.
