US Club Lacrosse Rankings Out

Also Stars started a high school program and YJ MA launched as well, and further diluted the NoVA talent pool for High School.

There hasn’t been a dilution of talent. There has been a shortage of talent. Gone are Cardinal -Super Nova -2 Separate 3D & Metro teams - Cavalier. Could be others this is just off top of my head.

You can thank travel clubs in third grade for that. Rec. lacrosse is almost extinct.

There was also Virginia United which was coached by the former Langley and Freedom SR coach. His club helped grow lacrosse and he was one of the best coaches in N.VA of all time.

I agree with the concerns on Rec lacrosse diminishing in the area. The sport of lacrosse, especially for girls, is exploding in popularity and growth nationally. Strange if it can't sustain both rec and a good group of clubs in this area.

Agree, this is not a Capital thing, it’s a shortage of talent now. Both Capital and Pride had highly ranked and competitive HS teams just several years ago. I’ve had several girls playing for be the past 10 years and while there has always been some top talent on teams, the depth of talent across teams has fallen way off. It’s interesting to continually hear how lacrosse is the fastest growing sport, but in this area the numbers do not support this statement.

I have to disagree with your assessment. The problem isn’t that there are more travel teams it’s that there are less kids. Live Births peaked in 2007 (births not birth rate). After the 08 financial crash births declined add in a diversified sports industry (girls wrestling, field hockey At younger ages, rock climbing etc.). You’re going to have fewer athletes to go around.

Sounds like a good time to provide better access to lacrosse to minority and immigrant/first generation communities in the area. Population isn't dwindling; certainly not in DC area.

The national boom that isn't reflected in Virginia can be attributed to soccer being a spring sport. Virginia is one of very few, if not the only state, that has HS soccer as a spring sport. The national growth of lacrosse attracts many kids who play soccer in the fall, and lacrosse in the spring is an easy add on. High Schools can easily add lacrosse because there isn't another field sport competing for athletes. The growth is much easier when it isn't competing with soccer. You are also competing with the growth of other travel sports. Travel volleyball and basketball have similar schedules to travel lacrosse.

If Virginia kids are rock climbing now it means lax is over for the DMV. What happens in Fairfax public schools is a bellwether for the entire area. They’re the Iowa caucuses of lacrosse.

Maybe this is true but it feels like lack of coaching/parent politics got in the way. The 26 teams were strong in middle school and then were all diluted as girls looked for better opportunities (not to mention COVID hit). Although it felt like the Ms teams didn’t get best skills training but had a lot of talent.

Now I know of a lot of girls who want to play or play lower level travel and are looking for better programs, particularly in DC and MOCO (feels like more options in Virginia) but can’t break in to a program that feels as serious s as when you read the STEPS, BLB or other programs offered elsewhwre. It feels like there is a huge gap now between what capital offers and what is going on at other teams.

You missed the joke

I must’ve missed the joke too but totally agree with poor coaching. Very few people know the game really well, at least in NOVA. The few that do get run out or are not respected to the level they should be and stop coaching. I give credit to a lot of the dads that step up but many don’t know the game so can’t teach it at a high level. Then you go into Baltimore and get throttled and the kids realize they are not even close to being good. It’s frustrating. Where are all the women that played at a high level??? More women need to step up and coach girls lacrosse. Very disappointing.

The difference in available coaching in DC relative to Baltimore is shocking. I can’t wrap my head around why that’s the case given the lacrosse talent here.

There are more teams in Baltimore. But Capital’s recruiting performance has proven top talent and coaching does indeed exist in the DMV.

This also explains some of the private school superiority - soccer is a fall sport for us.
