Only in places where the person expects to have a modicum of privacy (i.e. bathroom, etc).

Assuming OP is putting them in the house, that's not illegal.

+1. However, recording video with sound can be illegal without notifying the other party.

Do you put hidden cameras to pedophile priests too?
Anonymous
It is illegal to put hidden cameras and not notify any person there

OP, you can get sued

Career nanny here. I have no problems with cameras that I am informed of. If I found out someone was filming me surreptitiously I would be very angry and possibly quit on the spot. What if I pick my nose or pull my shirt or fart? I'm not trying to be silly I am trying to make parents understand what a violation this is. We don't work in offices we work in your home. What do you do when the nanny goes out? Again if you are that hesitant to leave your child with someone you feel you need to film secretly then you haven't done your due dilligence in checking criminal references, employer references and selectively interviewing and getting to know at least somewhat the person you are hiring. Nannies aren't for everyone and that's ok but if you are that paranoid find a daycare where there are more than one caregiver attending.

I would quit on the spot if I was your nanny.

We had a nanny, never had cameras, but this was during the pandemic so I was working remotely and spent a lot of time with the nanny at the beginning.

That said I don't really understand the argument about why hire someone you can't trust. A background check only catches what the person has been caught for in the past, and I put very little stock in the majority of references from other parents.

But I'd never put a camera without disclosing.

So what’s the plan—you’re going to come home every night and spend hours of your evening watching video of your nanny & kid?
Anonymous
Don’t do this OP.

PP who did not trust previous parents - can you tell us why? assuming the nanny worked for someone easily identified through google search - why? Do you think other people are stupid?

This.

While it may be LEGAL to film a Nanny in your home w/o her consent, ethically it IS wrong.

Reason being is that you would be starting off the relationship on deceit which is never a good starting point for any relationship period.

If someone wants to harm a child they are going to do it where they know they aren't being watched. I would think that every nanny either knows, or believes, there are cameras in the house.

I agree. I did what people suggested and hired an experienced seemingly kind woman who abused my kids. I was suspicious pretty quickly because of things I saw. She ignored them and stuck them in activity seats for hours. They screamed and cried and she dragged one out of his seat roughly because she couldn't hear the person she was on the phone with.

You cannot determine what people are like from an interview or from references. I know this factually. I would disclose the camera but not say where it is.

None of those things you mention will determine who will be abusive to your kids. We all tell ourselves that but it is a lie.
