I speak from experience within the past year.
I've never applied for Sidwell aid.

NCS gives $5K to HHI $300K with one kid in private? My friend has two kids in NCS and HHI $400K, and said they did not get any aid. Does this make sense?

Well… that is 100k more so almost 2 tuitions.

Why wouldn’t that make sense? They can’t live on $200k?

I can’t believe anyone would ever recommend you sell your house and downsize. With interest rates where they are now, there’s no price point for a home in this area that would save you anything at this crazy rates.

Someone I know receives aid at three schools while owning about $3 million of real estate in two of the nicest neighborhoods in Bethesda and Chevy Chase. The entitlement is off the charts and yes private school is not a right. They make absolutely no lifestyle changes to try and afford it, and just count on aid. I would love to know how they are scamming this aid but I have to think karma will get them in the end.

What does that say about the basic values of those schools?

I think it says something only about the basic values of those people. The schools can’t even ask follow up questions about any FA application because god forbid they ask further questions about someone and get accused of discrimination. Also none of the kids contribute anything academically, athletically, or arts wise to any of the schools that are paying for them to attend.

They must be very good at hiding money.

But things like this hurt the families who actually need aid and the ability of the school to fundraise for FA.

They are both self employed so I have to think that’s how they do it. And yes, I always was so confused why some people make sure their donations do NOT go to financial aid and now I get it. I don’t want to help pay for these peoples’ kids to go to the schools I scrimp and save for my kids to attend - while they seemingly have the same lifestyle I do. They are just paying probably $10k of a tuition I pay $48k for.

Ok, the situation above is exceedingly rare. Let's not dismiss all annual fund giving because one DMV family is managing to pull off some crazy situation with multiple homes, multiple schools and financial aid fraud.

+1

This is DCUM's answer to every financial pressure and it makes zero sense to me.

Are Sidwell and NCS need blind (meaning they will offer a spot regardless of financial aid need then separately offer aid which may or may not be what you think you need)?

NCS is not. Sidwell may be.

Most of these schools are need blind in committee and need aware with offers.

STA is truly need blind. I think they might be the only one in the DMV.
