Top 3 financial aid

Anonymous
Agree with other posters to go ahead and apply for aid, but I would also apply to a few privates where you could afford tuition without aid (Catholics?) as a back up. Your kid will do fine, maybe even better outcomes, if they don't go to the "Top 3."

Catholic high schools give merit scholarships based on the HSPT score. My kid got $10k a year discount on a $20k tuition a few years ago. Kid had 99th percentile score.

There was a thread a few days ago with people with HHI 300k only paying 10 k of a 50k price tag.

Where do we think they attend and/or what do you suppose is special about their circumstance?

Not all schools are the same. STA has a very large endowment (happy alums, well run school) and will give aid at much higher incomes than NCS or even Sidwell.
OP is applying to NCS and they don't have deep pockets. Less than 20% of kids are on aid vs. 40%+ at STA.

We give generously to our scholarship fund at our k-12 and I’d be livid if even a cent went to a family like yours. Rent a room in your house, tutor on the side, pull out a heloc, etc. The kids i know at our school who receive generous aid are not in a position to do any of the above. My dd’s good friend is first generation, both parents work 2 jobs, the grandparents, parents and all 3 kids live in a 2 bedroom apt. These are the families that benefit bc private would be out of reach, and it has been life changing for this little girl. Her alternative would be to go to an awful public school w/ no support bc only one parent is even fluent in English.

Sell your house and live more within a budget that will allow you to afford the education you want for your kid. If they get in, of course! That's always a crapshoot.

New poster here but 300k HHI in the DC area is not wealthy. We have a similar income and support one elderly parent and cannot afford full pay at 40k and above. We’ve focused on the 25-30k schools. DC needs the smaller class size so we make private a priority.

Actually it is wealthy and about lifestyle choices. We sent our to private for a few years, had a parent with dementia live with us for a year and child had multiple therapies a week and we made it work as I could not work between the kid and parent. No vacations, very careful with everything and we made half what you do. No family help.

On $300k they can comfortably afford one in private. This poster is right.

Thank you, so kind. Seriously tell me how it’s self righteous when I want my donation to go to someone truly needy who doesn’t have other options vs an only child in a family earning $300k/year? Our money is hard earned - we both work our tails off and I don’t want to throw it away when someone without other options could benefit from it, but thanks for your kind comment.

The has got to be a middle ground between people with wealth and 7 people living in a 2 br apt

We make about the same amount, have 3 kids and plan to send our kids to Catholic high schools. We also help family members and donate to our kids Catholic school for scholarships. We still make it work even without financial aid altho we may get some if we have more than one in high school.

If we only had one kid on our current income, I would never even think of applying for financial aid and would be donating more money to their school to help others out.

Seriously, shame on you.

Then you should be livid because your school gives FA to this type of family.

I speak from experience within the past year.
I've never applied for Sidwell aid.

NCS gives $5K to HHI $300K with one kid in private? My friend has two kids in NCS and HHI $400K, and said they did not get any aid. Does this make sense?

Lower your vacation and clothing budget if you want private school.
