Same, but went to VA. Much greater variety of great options than MD—UVA, Tech, William & Mary, etc,

DS graduated FCPS and is now attending UMD. Having a blast. Shockingly he's a CS major.

It makes sense for kids who major in CS or engineering. It is not great for certain other majors or undecided. In other words, like all schools, it’s not the right choice for everyone. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad school. It’s actually a very good one and great/excellent in certain majors.

It’s also different being from VA. If you live in MD near the school there are many events there (my kid had swim practice in their pool and another kid went to camp there) and I think that is why there is a desire to get further away, even if to a nearby state.

Well, your kid still needs to get in to one of those CA schools.

Yes, this is true. They currently rank #1 in their class, and have a 4.6 GPA and instead of there only being on okay college, there are two excellent (UCLA / Berkeley) several strong ones (Irvine, Davis, SB, SD, SC) and so many, many more options. HURRAH!

And you have earthquakes and wildfires- #feartheturtle- UMD alum and parent

Sure. I don't live in the wildfire areas though, you have to know that CA is huge. And I experienced an earthquake living in Bethesda that was worse than any I've had in CA. So...

…and you don’t know the difference between one minor experience you had in MD and living on top of fault lines??

I know plenty. That was not the content of the post you're replying to. Try to be more clever, you're not doing well at the moment.

This. We literally live within walking distance to campus and my kids do NOT want to go there.

yeah, same here... both of my kids chose Ivies over UMD.
.

And kids also choose UMD over Ivies. So you are rich. What’s your point?

Truth. California parent is annoying. Yet CA does have several excellent schools due to its size. Maryland is a much smaller state!

I am pro UMD yet not everyone can get in and there isn’t another comparable in-state option.

Give yourself time. Let’s see you rock a 9.

-the school prioritized diversity for a period and many white families soured on the school as their white kids were rejected while their diverse friends with comparable or worse stats made it in

-the school started prioritizing more OOS students

-kids still want to go there (or their families do), but it’s a crapshoot whether they will get in

-college application experts say while they can almost always predict whether a kid can get in or if it’s a reach, they can’t accurately predict UMCP. And nobody likes a crapshoot.

-kids are still applying, but not getting in…and then they/their families trash the school.

-a prof penned a bizarre rant that went viral and it likely turned off people

-MD Asian and Indian families are staying put at UMCP. White families with $$$ in MD are looking elsewhere.

You just described many of the VA state schools as well. Same thing happening over here. IT seems so many kids are now going to state flagships OOS instead of their own because they got frozen out.

CA is superior to MD in many ways, but people who don’t live there constantly use the threat of earthquakes to put it down.

I was there this week. Had to put $5.79/gal gas on my rental. How about your tax?

Yeah what a loser this person from CA is. Justifying the bad choice they made moving to CA by bashing MD on a site for people who live in the DMV.

Not surprising at CA is quite a bit larger than MD
