Almost all colleges and universities do with a few exceptions.

Is ED just a backdoor way to restore elite-gamily preference without the legacy backlash?

It is good choice for private school kids who want to be at a good private but do not have the grades to get into any ivies or Duke etc.

uChicago kids have better stats than all of the Ivies. Only schools with better are CalTech and MIT

It is 2 fold -
Yes it is a way for legacy to get preference without it having to call out that it is a thumb on the scale.
It is also a way for the school to more efficiently manage their enrollment.

When you have ED you have about 95% of those kids enrolling the next year. They are not surprised with enrollment - they do not need to find new dorms or hustle after RD to fill their class. Uncertainty increases costs to the school. Enrollment models for RD are not as accurate and with this the schools need to spend a lot of energy (and $) to confirm that a 17 YO will say yes and come the following year.

U Chicago is just gaming the system to get a better rating. It is not a top 20 school.

They are committed to a school before knowing what their financial aid is, if any.

That's not true. They get the aid offer and can exit the agreement if it's too expensive.

What is true is that they have to decide on the ED school before they can compare other aid offers.

But they are supposed to do Net Price Calculator before ED.
There are some who think this is optional.

I know lots of high stats kids who have limited other dimensions. These box checkers are typically not at CalTech or MIT. They are at some of the other schools mentioned here.

Of course. Those 99 Nobel laureates (as recent as 2023) are just incidental.

That is unethical to do so. It would turn the ED model upside down if everyone did that. Only do ED if you can easily afford it.

Not true. UVA is a public. It is not common for public schools to offer ED. I think UVA, W&M, a couple SUNY schools and University of Vermont are the only public schools with ED? Maybe there are other Virginia schools? Correct me if I am wrong.

Would like to see a list of all colleges & universities with a yield rate of 60% or more.

Doesn't this school have like 4 rounds of ED? Lmao. They're infamous for "gaming" the system, to their favor and to their merit.

Yep. Chicago has high yield because they admit nearly their entire class from ED1 and ED2. My DC applied RD and was waitlisted but in April UChicago contacted them and said if they agree to matriculate at UChicago they’ll offer them a spot. DC politely declined because was accepted to a HYP. Heard this happening to other waitlist kids as well during April. But some offered a spot from the waitlist also were required to take a gap year. Very strange.
I doubt there are many, if any, that would, if they had the choice, choose UChicago over HYPSM, and maybe some others as well.
UChicago plays too many games and is concerned more about yield and perceived selectivity above accepting the top/best students.

U Chicago has 2 ED rounds & accepts most of each class via ED.

Does anyone have a longer list of Class of 2027 yield rates ?

I cannot find Northwestern's Class of 2027 yield rate; the yield rate for Northwestern's Class of 2026 was 63%.

If you’re a super intense kid who loves and excels at serious academics above all else, the Chicago ED1 and 2 (and 3) games are a pretty good deal. There is no other super intensely academic school where you are actively courted and where you have a pretty good chance of getting in as long as you apply ED. (Assuming stellar academic credentials)
