Is ED just a backdoor way to restore elite-gamily preference without the legacy backlash?
It is 2 fold - Yes it is a way for legacy to get preference without it having to call out that it is a thumb on the scale. It is also a way for the school to more efficiently manage their enrollment. When you have ED you have about 95% of those kids enrolling the next year. They are not surprised with enrollment - they do not need to find new dorms or hustle after RD to fill their class. Uncertainty increases costs to the school. Enrollment models for RD are not as accurate and with this the schools need to spend a lot of energy (and $) to confirm that a 17 YO will say yes and come the following year.
