This. In 7th grade, I remember a project where we figured out the different zones if NYC got hit. Where I lived, it wasn’t instant death, but death within a couple weeks depending on weather. Regardless, there was no hope of longterm survival. I live in Virginia now and further out, but I have zero interest in fighting it out as radiation kills me. |

I don't consider myself a prepper but my wife probably does.
I first bought emergency rations after Hurricane Sandy. We lived in NJ and lost power for a week (we actually left the area and stayed in a hotel in DC, because we could, so it's not like we suffered). But I realized that having food on hand made sense - why not? Then after we moved to DC in 2014, I bought a bunch of 25 year shelf life food - maybe during an ebola or flu scare? I also bought some N95s which ironically I new I had but couldn't find when the pandemic hit. I probably overbought the 25 year food, but again, why not? Now we also keep a solid amount of regular food in our pantry. Probably 30-50 boxes of pasta, 30-50 boxes of rice, canned vegetables. We are a family of 5 and would turn over that amount of food in a month anyway. Better to have it in the pantry. I'm not anticipating a collapse but again, there is very little cost and/or hassle, and lots of upside if you can't or don't want to leave the house for several weeks. And this is what happened during the first few months of the pandemic. |

I didn't think I knew any preppers but my DH bought 150 rolls of toilet tissue just before the schools were shut down due to Covid in Feb / March 2020 and several gallons of drinking water. He also got road maps of the region and set up grab bags with cans of food, can openers, outside burners (like for camping gas fires) and similar.
I think that's prep behavior, isn't it? |
| So if I were to draw a Venn diagram of hard core preppers and people who lost their minds during the pandemic/wouldn’t wear a mask/are still mad schools closed/minimal coping skills—-what would it look like? |
| I don’t think it will be a big event but rather a series of events. Go to the collapse subreddit. |
| My Dc would die in the event of an apocalyptic event due to lack of a medication so there is no point. I would rather die as well |
| I have a ton of booze, candles and matches. That's my prep work. |
| I bought the 12 pack of beer vs the 6 |
