It's easier to get into than UVA from NoVA and much easier to get into than GU for public NoVa Hs kids.

Michigan wouldn’t accept 22 students from any OOS school if there weren’t a high amount of matriculation.

OP here. I went to high school in a wealthy suburb of NYC. I am pretty sure at least 10 kids went to UMich from my high school and I am guessing 20+ kids were admitted. This was back in the nineties.

OP here. We can afford the tuition but it pains me to pay that for public. We will see if our kid actually gets in first.

What’s the special character of a lower ranked private that makes it worth more than a higher ranked public?

+1

My 4.0 unwgpa, 4.9w wgpa, 1580 SAT DC was waitlisted, CS major.

A friend of theirs with similar stats was accepted as an Engineering major.

DD with similar stat also waitlisted for CS

key words.

College admissions is very different today. So much harder now. So many people who got into these top schools back 30s yrs ago wouldn't be able to get in today.

So crazy. I think it does not help that we are in a high achieving area, and these kids are competing with each other.

My son loves UMich. He had never even been there yet. He is a solid student and is a strong athlete but not college recruit type athlete.

My National Merit Scholar kid, with 12 APs, all 5s, 35 ACT, Varsity sport (3 years as captain), summer job since age 15 with increasing responsibilities, with high GPA - I only remember WGPA, 4.81, and we are full pay, was deferred and then rejected. We visited in person, child went to the in person AO visit at their school and attended online webinars.

Easier for undergrad OOS than for post grad. DC’s post grad program accepted <5% applicants to U Mich post grad stem program.

OP there are many good options and hopefully your DC will find great school for them.

For STEM - if your DC does not mind the cold - University of Illinois Urbana Champaign has some top ranked programs and is easier to get into .

it's weird.. I'm a PP whose high stats DC was waitlisted at Mich for CS but rejected at UIUC.

This sounds entirely made up.

Could be possible.

FWIW our very small independent school has had 3 to 6 attendees a year for the last 5 years at least. I think all are EA. Their majors are all over the place. These are kids who do serious research and/or niche fields.

But it does seem like a crapshoot. I don't think Michigan even looks at our high school, honestly. There's no pattern or formula of who got in.

I do know parents who applied for DC TAG funds for lots of state schools. That might make Michigan more attractive? 🤔

Good luck to everyone. There are plenty of great schools out there.

Sorry that must have been hard for your kid.

College applications are simply nuts now.

Grades needed will depend on what school your DD is applying to.

Yeah, that sucks but what major did kid indicate on application?
