It is blowing my mind how competitive the SEC has gotten in the last 3 years. I suspect Clemson and UofSC will be even more competitive.

Clemson Yes more competitve, Uof SC- propbably not- it is such a large school. Auburn and Clemson are much smaller.

Large schools are competitive too. UofSC is the size of VT.

Of course, but 4.25 for Auburn is bananas! I know my kid is in a NOVA public school, is at 4.2 and she is class ranked at 30%. So for our school I think if you are just above 4.0 you are probably closer to 50%

I really think more emphasis needs to be put on SAT to have some sort of baseline.

Instead schools are going TO...

+1. They should really be going Grade Optional, with the only requirement being no Ds.

These schools use the SAT heavily.

I agree! With so much ridiculous grade inflation there needs to be some sort of standard. I also think weighted averages should be tossed out the window. It’s especially not fair for kids who don’t have AP and DE course offerings at their school. And I say this as a parent with a Kid who will graduate with 10 AP/DEs and a handful of weighted honors classes. However that would really upset the racket the college board has going.

Yep. My kid is the same (will graduate with 10APs, 1 DE and 2 post-AP classes) but if grades were optional (D or above, say), he would have explored more - taken a business or cooking class vs. years of math and science. Imagine if the only test you had to take was a PSAT or SAT once a year - 9th through 11th. Spend the rest of the year studying what you enjoy. How much fun would high school be! We all want our kids to be happy, but not really..

The concept of “wholistic” approach is such BS. My sons school has a great gourmet cooking class and he wanted to take it , but said “no, even if I get an A+ that will bring down my GPA because it’s not weighted” how F’d up is that??”

I personally think the SAT should be expanded into the sciences and history and a foreign language section and it should include a suprise writing prompt. Would really test your writing skills without AI, grammerly or a bunch of consultants editing it.

10/17 @ 11:48 post— do you happen to know if gpa is figured on core classes only?

No idea but I’d doubt it.

See, this sounds like a normal, bright kid (I mean that in the best way possible). Congrats!

Congrats! My kiddo has very similar stats and is waiting for Auburn EA2 decisions to be released (at least a couple of weeks). This gives me hope!

This is my dream. I started hearing in 10th to have my kid take the AP science in 11th so it would be in the GPA by application time. When the class options come out, we look at all the options to explore food and art ad journalism, but then get told that you need to AP in all classes if you want a shot. It's so messed up.

This is why no one can win right now. I agree with you, but for every person who feels this way, there's someone who feels the SAT is unfair. Same for essays ... I think they're helpful, but I understand the criticism that there's no way to know who did the work themselves.

I still can’t believe those stats for OOS admits…above a 30ACT for Auburn. We loved the school but my kid doesn’t have a 30 (just hoping to bring the 26 up to 28). Interesting how they accept lower stat kids for instate, where in FL and Tx it’s the opposite - harder for instagram students.
