They’re a scam! Lost two AirPods over about five years and went and got the blessedly wired, $20 EarPods and am never going back.

As an aside, it's astounding the sound quality difference between the pods and wired. With my airpods I feel like I'm at my own personal concert. With my wired ones I feel like I'm listening to music over a loud speaker at Target.

Your wired headphones must suck, or your device must have an awful headphone amp. Bluetooth normally uses lossy compression for audio, so anything that uses it will sound worse (or, at least, be less faithful to the original recording) than wired devices, all other things being equal.
