new teacher replacement

855 (eight-hundred-and-fifty-five) positions on MCPS Careers. That seems high for this time of the year. And that’s not even all the listings that I’m aware of that are coming out in the next few weeks or months.

The shortages will not improve, with regards to special ed or paraeducators, because the school system is grinding them to dust. If that attitude is not turned around, you’ll keep seeing people flee for the exits.

That means we won't see the new long term sub until next year spring parent teacher conference

Does MCPS have spring conferences??

Not formally, but you can always request one.

Teacher know not to recommend but actively give advice not to be a teacher. We want students to have fulfilling lives and teaching is an unbalanced soul crushing job. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but once you find out how the sausage is made ...

Don't let the vacancy number scare you. When schools get their staffing they find that they can hire more teachers. They post the jobs early so they can hire before July. These vacancies also include coaches, paras, lunch aides, etc.

But there are few teachers to hire. I am involved with hiring for my school. A position used to get many, many applicants so we could be choosy. Now we hope we get one person to apply so we have a person to hire. If we can’t get that one person, we know long-term subs and burned out teachers have to cover the position.

Well my third grader hasn’t had a teacher for four weeks straight yet the job isn’t posted in MCPS careers….so what does that mean?!?

I think all sub teacher(s) follow curriculum to teach students, and of course a long term sub is a lot better than different temp subs for the rest of school year. Is 2nd grade important? If my kid is really strong on academic, will she get affected less? Her IEP is mainly behavioral and social goals, and team work in school setting.

Supplement at home.

I know two teachers who have been surplussed and I'm sure there are many more. They can fill some of these vacant positions for next year.
