Teens getting a good amount of sleep

No phone etc

What school is your kid in where they have 4-5.5.5 hours of homework per night.

Also they can be doing a lot of things other than the homework on their devices which are for school (laptop, etc).

DP. My DC is the same. Goes to bed around midnight, 1am, etc and is in sports etc. Goes to Sidwell. Seems to be the norm though.

If they are taking that long, they are either in classes way beyond their knowledge or they are socializing online while doing homework

My junior son is taking AP Calc BC, AP Lang, AP Physics, APUSH, Spanish 4, CS Data Structures, and AP Psych. He plays varsity and club sports and is involved in several other ECs. He uses his time efficiently in class and during the free block every other day. He has 7 or 8 hours after school with which to study, do HW, play sports, go to clubs, eat dinner, etc. It seems to be enough time when coupled with various hours on the weekend and days off.

I would encourage all parents to check the digital well-being or time app on their kids' phones to see how much time is being wasted there.

I agree. And if staying awake until 1am every day is required to be in a “rigorous program” then I’ll pass anyway.

Homework till 1am every day is not required to be in a "rigorous program". My kid was in SMCS in Poolesville. He slept at 10pm, got up at 6:30am. Was out of the house by 7 am, in his school before the first bell (around 7:40am).

He showered at night, ate breakfast in car, had a blanket and pillow in the car to sleep more if he wanted, I packed his lunch, and I drove him to school. His school bus came at some unGodly hour so he never took the bus to school. He was usually home by 4pm or 5pm. A very long day. Homework was finished at school.

Check the time he spends on his phone. I guarantee you that he is wasting time somewhere. Which is totally fine if he and you are okay with him going to bed by 1am.

MY DS rarely has homework at home. He has one full free period during the day, lunch, a long mid day break and then an hour of office hours between last class and afternoon activities starting.

OP again. Thanks everyone. I'm really encouraged to see that there are many teens out there who do manage to get a healthy amount of sleep. Nice to know it is possible.

It all begins with the phones.

If it’s taking 4-5 hrs to get homework done they are in the wrong classes.

4-5 maybe exam week, but not regularly

APUSH 1 to 1.5 hours
AP English 1 to 1.5
Then all the rest….

I would re-evaluate all my life choices if my kid had 4-5 hours of homework every single night that he or she could not start until 8pm and was getting 6 hours of sleep a night.

Seriously bad parenting.

It’s not the norm. My child goes to a similar school and we get and email every year to talk to counseling if they can’t get HW done in 3 hours, unless it’s exam time.

Your child is over their head in course work.

What kind of life is that for a kid? Seriously?

Your child lacks efficiency in doing their work.
