I haven’t asked and I don’t care. What I do care about is having a teacher that shows up and does his/her job or at least provides actual learning materials for a sub. It is sad that not only do teachers call out all the time, but nothing is left. The kids literally play some computer game the whole time.

Do you have any idea of how many high schoolers just play "some computer game" on their devices during the school day anyway? While instruction is happening? No matter what the lesson actually is??

That is irrelevant. Teachers calling out all the time and substitute teachers literally doing nothing at all is a problem. The expectation is a teacher is there to actually teach. The expectation of the student is a separate issue.

I have seen a few dud high school teachers, basically do the bare minimum. Lots of time off for random medical issues, taking care of family, etc. I am sure there are actual family concerns, but these teachers have mastered taking advantage of the system to avoid getting fired.

If we don’t use the leave, we loose it. Anyways, there’s always a honeymoon period at a new job (so she’ll be happier, even if they don’t allow leave in the first few months.)

My kid's teacher called out Friday, 40+ students spent the entire day in a portable with their other grade level teacher. Needless to say he was very mean that day. I would be too! And on top of this, how is this allowed?

Anyone who gets sick or has a family emergency on the Friday before a holiday weekend is screwed with regard to getting a sub. I’m sure the principal is well aware of the situation. What would you have liked her to do?

One of my DD’s MA teachers broke his leg and is literally out for months because he “can’t drive.” Couldn’t the school pay to Uber him for less than the cost of a sub?

Other professional jobs often allow much more flexibility so that employees can handle life while still working FT. I’m a career changer so I know that other white collar jobs provide greater leeway to take an important 15 min phone call from a specialist or go to an 8 am doctor appointment and come in 30 min late. Since I switch to teaching, I have eaten up so many hours of leave because a sub was required if I needed any time off and subs want at least a half day. So I sit at home all day waiting for that call to discuss next week’s procedure.
