APS BTS Night - Shocked

We didn’t get homework till ninth grade lol! The work was so easy that my kids finished all her middle school work in class and never had homework unless she was studying for a test.

I skipped BTSN. Not really concerned or surprised by anything OP wrote, because this is our 10th year in APS. However, what is AAC? Or what does that acronym represent? I’ve only ever heard of “gifted” and “gifted resource teacher” or seen that written anywhere. Care to enlighten me?

Me, too, please?

Our DD was in K at parochial (we moved her there as it was Covid and public was fully virtual, while they were in-person). She had homework 3-4 nights/ week. Ok, it involved mostly pasting, cutting, and coloring (often of alphabet letters) but it was useful and helped her learn her reading and writing better.

It’s just what they are calling gifted now.

Exactly! They’re already at school for a full day. Why do you need your 7-year old to have homework?

What do the letters stand for and did we really just change it so it’s be more like FFX?

AAC=Advanced Academic Coach. Our reading teachers are now also called "reading coaches". Our AAC is the same person who was the "gifted resource" person.

Same.

We did private 6-8 for one and they breezed through HS and got into tier 1 school.

Our APS only child will probably not have that glide path and will finish hs and probably another route to college. Hopefully….but 6-8th in private was huge for structure and study habits.

Haha, have you ever seen the schedule for an elementary student? They spend maybe 2 hours on academics and half of that is with the iPad

It’s to reinforce the day lesson, and demonstrate competence and understanding independence of the classroom.

It also builds executive function to track, plan, and turn in homework, projects etc. if everything is just pop and do what is told in class, there is no independence required.

This does not need to be done in 2nd grade. These skills can be started in 4th and still be successful. The difference between 2nd and 4th grade is HUGE. The leap in 3rd from "little kid" to "big kid" is insane. Don't rush it.

I think that is kid dependent — ours would have benefited from an earlier start.

IME often the kids who “would have benefitted from an earlier start” for that kind of thing really needed an extra year or two without it, because they weren’t developmentally ready.

Homework in 1st and 2nd really just assesses whether the child is lucky enough to have an adult who can say, ”okay, let’s do homework, what do you have, here are the directions, etc.”
