Are you afraid of being a target of crime wearing luxury handbags/fine jewelry?

Even for weddings, everyone is buying fake gold plated jewelry with artificial stones.

But if the fake jewelry looks real then they could still be targets. Doesn’t really protect you from being assaulted. Better to just not wear any jewelry- fake or real.

Same. Didn’t wear jewelry on metro when used to ride the metro. Now stopped riding it altogether.

Probably shouldn’t wear any clothes… someone might want to take them.

I refuse to take the metro. I feel more comfortable wearing my good jewlery when I travel to England/Netherlands/parts of France, Germany and Italy. And the fine jewelry/heirloom spends almost all it's time in safes.

I routinely turn my diamond ring around to face the palm of my hand when traveling.

I’ve decided not to take any good jewelry to Italy/Croatia this summer.

I don’t worry in DC. But I also don’t venture far from my office when downtown.

I’m traveling to PR in a few weeks and will not wear my wedding set - silicone band FTW. I also going to the Netherlands late next month and will wear my wedding set. It’s all location dependent.

As far as DC goes: I no longer live there but I it’s my hometown. I was there during Marion Barry and the crack epidemic. I am going there this weekend and couldn’t be less concerned about what I’ll be wearing. Exercise situational awareness and don’t travel alone.

These days, my neighborhood is like many others in DC you're a target just by being outside. Or inside, really, because they break into buildings and check all the doors.

These kids will mug for anything. I retired my diamond earrings and nicer bags last year until things calm back down. My car is a crappy street-parked city car, so I don't worry about carjackings much.

So many earrings are czs/ fakes. Would a thief care about “diamond” earrings since they are likely fake? It’s hard to tell the difference.

I suppose since they are my ears I'll make the decision and risk assessment as is comfortable for me. Years ago, friend in NY had her earrings ripped out by some guy on the street; they didn't ask her questions about clarity before doing so.

Considering here most of these crimes are done by youths, because they are allowed to or they are doing for the Gram, they don’t care what it is. They aren’t doing it for money.

I live in a poverty-stricken Southern town and rarely wear my engagement ring. It's not DMV-expensive but well-cut, very flashy, and draws attention. I stopped wearing it shorting after moving here after a few really sketchy men commented on it.

Not wearing or carrying it, but there has been a wave of folks getting robbed coming out of stores. Grabbing their shopping bags, without knowing/caring what's in it.

I transfer at metro center and Chinatown to get to work and do not travel with nice handbags or jewelry. Wear your bling on the weekends if you don’t want things stolen.

Signed a New Yorker.

Nothing flashy, real or fake on metro or walking around DC.

In Paris, where I'm from, my grandmother nearly had her fingers broken by thieves who tore her rings from her fingers. My uncle was robbed at knife point on the metro. Pickpockets are everywhere, as are bag snatchers.

In DC? No. Apparently they're more into car-jackings.

In Tokyo? You can go to sleep on the subway, drop your wallet, and have it returned to your hotel. This happened to an acquaintance of mine.

I love Tokyo so much.

I never travel with jewelry or fancy purses. I didn’t buy my college kid a fancy winter coat for school in the Midwest because of the threat of being rubbed at gunpoint for it. Life has gotten weird.

Interesting. The three times items were stolen from me took place in Miami, California and England. I no longer wear my engagement ring. I always wear costume jewelry when traveling

Yes! I stopped wearing my diamond engagement ring a long time ago and no longer use expensive purses. I swear I was followed on foot for my ring and stopped wearing it. Also my car has been broken into 3x. I can't wait to move in a few months.

I had some Indian jewelry but no more.Everything I wear and keep at home is useless for resale. Thieves won't get more than pennies. New fake jewelry designs are better anyways. I sold all valuable jewelry and remaining few pieces with sentimental value are in bank locker. When I travel, I don't even wear any designer looking items. Why help out criminals?
