Are you afraid of being a target of crime wearing luxury handbags/fine jewelry?

For sure. No expensive jewelry, no flashy designer bag. Why make yourself stand out?

All of my Indian friends have locked their real jewelry in bank lockers and now wear fake jewelry. One, jewelry became expensive, second, they don't want to be a target of theft or robbery, lastly because fake jewelry industry has evolved amazingly. Even for weddings, everyone is buying fake gold plated jewelry with artificial stones.

Way to go victim blaming. People have a right to go about their day without feeling afraid or threatened.

In Paris, where I'm from, my grandmother nearly had her fingers broken by thieves who tore her rings from her fingers. My uncle was robbed at knife point on the metro. Pickpockets are everywhere, as are bag snatchers.

In DC? No. Apparently they're more into car-jackings.

In Tokyo? You can go to sleep on the subway, drop your wallet, and have it returned to your hotel. This happened to an acquaintance of mine.

I love the subway naps in Tokyo. My elementary age DD was sitting next to me reading a book just before evening rush hour and a businessman nodded off next to her and eventually fell asleep on her shoulder. He was so fast asleep and she was so engrossed in her book that my DH was able to switch spots with her without the businessman noticing nor my DD noticing why he’d switched with her!

Of course. If it weren't for low life criminals, world would be a much better place.

Imagine a world where no one has to look over their shoulders, no military or police or courts because no protection is needed.

Half of humanity's resources are waisted on weapons, security, military, police, prisons etc etc.

NP here. It is why most of us, who have probably been born and raised in major cities, stash our good stuff far away.

Who and why are Indian communities being targeted?

I’m Pakistani American and wear gold bangles. I don’t take them on trips, but in bad neighborhoods I push them way under my sleeves.

I live in Bethesda and have never felt unsafe there but some neighborhoods of DC I do.

Eh, I've never worn expensive jewelry, purchased expensive cars, or used an expensive handbag. I've gotten through life just fine, and don't have to look over my shoulder all the time. And, I have some savings.

I'm a resident in DC and I do feel like I can still wear luxury items that aren't obvious. I agree with the person who said it really depends where they are going. I do hope public outrage brings all this criminal activity to a stop. I have faith things will get better.

My neighbor wears her Canada goose just a few blocks from the AU bus stop robbery.

But if the fake jewelry looks real then they could still be targets. Doesn’t really protect you from being assaulted. Better to just not wear any jewelry- fake or real.
